whatever the people from this region are they are certainly not "latin". But yet they are still called latin. Thats all I here in the media is them being referred to latin. What do the actual south/central americans consider themselves?. Real latins came from a region in italy called latium not mexico/puerto rico. nothing against these people at all it just seems latin is the wrong word, maybe its a media creation? They should be called AMERICANS,because most people from Latin America are part in bloodlines from the first AMERICANS,THE =>AMERINDIANS.

Maybe they should be referred to by their nation of origin.

Maybe they should be referred to by their nation of origin. I agree on that. But the media wants to group ever "Latino" together in one big enchilada.

They figure, "hey, they speak Spanish so they're all the same anyway." The media types have to put everyone in some huge group or else they have a hissy fit. It doesn't matter that within groups there are subgroups. Someone born to immigrants from Nigeria would still be considered in the same as a blacks whose family has been here since the 18th century. Doesn't matter to them that both have different backgrounds.

Yeah but most Hispanics in the U.S aren't exactly complaining about the higher ups lumping all Cubans,Mexicans,Puerto Ricans,Nicaraguans,Dominicans,Salvadorians, Colombians,Guatemalans, etc into one single group.

That's true, Tony. Although some Cubans do have a problem but it's more of a whimper than an outcry.

Most Spaniards in the USA don't want to be labeled as "Hispanics". Only when there is money to be made. Im sure Antonio Banderas likes to be labeled as "Hispanic.

What are you talking about? I was talking about pre-Historic Basque immigrants that predated Asian immigration.

In NYC they aren't classified as Hispanic. I don't know about other places. Hispanic is basically another term for "different" and Spaniards, to Americans, don't appear very different to them. That's been my experience. Terms get misused all the time. I remember years ago there was an incident where a university (one in Illinois, i forget which) hired a Spaniard as a professor and listed him as "Hispanic" (which, technically he is) but Hispanic groups were complaining about it. They stated the man didn't represent them. Yet, technically he's Hispanic. So the school didn't do anything underhanded. I thought it was funny at time.

So Spaniards are the only Europeans who qualify for Affirmative Action minority based scholarships in the U.S.

hmmm.. perhaps... if you list Hispanic and don't bother to be specific. Even then some people wouldn't know that Spain is in Europe. I never shade any of the ovals. I just write out European.

Its funny that I have some friends in Los Angeles who consider Armenians to be White but not Spaniards even though Spaniards are Europeans and Armenians are not.I guess they think because they are surrounded by Spanish speaking people who are obviously NonWhite with visible Amerindians features that Spaniards will have these same features as well.

AFAIK Armenians arent considered white at least in bakersfield, they have their own "armenian Power" gangs and a high crime problem
