It's banning time. What are you talking about? I haven't broken forum rules. And who's Moulin?

What are you talking about? I haven't broken forum rules. And who's Moulin? You're the only one who thought that Amadis was banned from here. The 'Portuguese are effeminate' line is very familiar, as well. Anyway, call it a pre-emptive strike.

LOL. It's not that I really have anything against Moulin, but it's *so* obvious that he posts here only to piss people off. That works on RM, but not on Dodona.

I sense three different feelings of injustice running through this thread, one that English historians pay little attention to the Portuguese (this feeling I find only slightly justified, as the victor writes the books and it makes you Ports seem somewhat effeminate and in need of praise/attention) two that English historians and Hollywood producers villify/dumb down the Portuguese (I find this feeling justified, it is not pleasant to see one's people slandered) and three that the English consider themselves superior to the Portuguese (this feeling is not justified at all, as the English ARE superior to the Portuguese in almost every way. The fact that they go about presenting it in a less than 100% honest manner should not in any way take away from their superior accomplishments, and the fact that they are superior does not mean that the Portuguese have done nothing). Superior? RÁ! Only in uglyness! You became important, but you were always PATHETIC and you are in the way of becoming this again...

Forget the troll. In Australia we are quite conscious of our history and we know about the Portuguese and later Dutch inspections of the Australian coast. The fact that the English have gotten the glory is irrelevent to the fact of prior Portuguese and Dutch exploration. It was the Dutch that named Rottnest Island of the West Australian coast and one of them left an inscribed pewter plate.
The funniest thing is that in my home State, Victoria, everyso often treasury hunters look for a fabled Portuguese ship that ran into a sandbank and was buried under large sand drifts. It is reputed to re-appear due to shifting sands, but no-one has found the ship yet.

Many have spent their lives looking for it, I suspect that Kenneth McInytire mentioned in the original post who came from Warnambool was hit by the Mahogany ship bug. This is an official site about the Mahogany ship- Heritage shipwrecks This is believed to be the first map of Australia from 'the Dieppe maps' it shows the North east coast with the Portuguese place names. you can get a larger picture by clicking 'Interactive map' I can't link it. There was supposedly a Portuguese cannon found on Fraser island on the east coast but it was found to be corroded metal from an Italian ship washed up in the early 1900's. This article states that there were cannons found off the Kimberley coast but doesn't provide much information about it. I remember seeing an aboriginal dreamtime performance about the contact between aborigines and Portuguese traders but I can't find a link to it. Here's one for Alex, a Britannica.com article about the Great Barrier reef
