What do you think about the radical leftist black politicians (Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton,) and what do you think about the mentally ill Louis Farrakhan who blames Jews for any and all wrongdoings committed against blacks. Finally, how do you feel about affirmative action?

Why do blacks refuse to assimilate into mainstream culture and then complain when they are discriminated against?

I don't think any of the people I know that do made a concious decision to do so. They talk like the people they know and grew up around. Fair enough, but what about black Americans from affluent or middle class backgrounds that speak with said accent? What's your take? For black Americans that speak proper english, there is still an 'affect', which I don't know how to explain. It's not quite an accent...but it's a noticeable affect. I'm not versed in linguistics, I can't answer that question.

Alaina, being a black American, are you noticeably mixed? Or do you look West African? Just to clarify matters, my father is white. I think I look like an average AA.

Finally, how do you feel about affirmative action? My family has been Republican for three generations, so I have been 'influenced'. I personally can't stand Jackson or Sharpton. They are poverty pimps, ambulance chasers, and opportunists. They get their living from feeding AA's the 'doctrine of oppression.' I don't know much about Farrakhan, except that he's a racist. My stance on affirmative action? I don't think that the U.S. goverment, or any government should have a 'race-based' policy. Private institutions, such as some uni's and businesses may do as they see fit.

Why do blacks refuse to assimilate into mainstream culture and then complain when they are discriminated against? Some blacks do assimilate, some don't. I don't think that discrimination should follow if people don't assimilate, but I believe it would preferable if there was a homogenous culture in the U.S.

Asians assimilated and now look at them. I think it takes 2 or more generations but if every black person was more discreet about "black culture" and spoke standardized English and assumed "white" mannerisms, jobs, and lifestyle, then within a couple generations things would be completely different. Imagine if every black family was like the Cosby's. It's not far-fetched really. Any black can attend college and dress nice and assimilate IMO.

I'm sorry, that I can't help you with the other request, lol. I don't listen to hip-hop or rap music, although I used to when I was younger. I'm now hooked on 90's rock, I usually listen to the Counting Crows, Gin Blossoms, Blues Traveler. I also like some Billy Joel.

I don't pretend to have a definitive answer, but here is my take. In some Asian cultures, education is highly valued. For AA's, they just started to have widespread access to higher education in the sixties. They haven't learned to make it a part of their children's vision for the future. My grandma doesn't understand the importance of college, she just knows that people are supposed to work or settle to family life. She doesn't understand why I want to go to grad school. I think it will get better in following generations.

On the other hand a lot of white and Asian youths seem to be trying to be black (as far as speech and dress), although I am sure people are laughing all the way to the bank. And people are definitely taking advantage of the educational opportunities... but for families trapped in poverty it's a huge step and will take time (that goes for first-in-family college students of any race).

White kids acting "ghetto" is pretty comical but some of them try way too hard to be like a "gangsta." It's not as bad as it used to be, though. When I was a kid in the early and mid 90s, when gangsta rap started becoming popular, I had to avoid certain areas of my mostly white town for fear up of being ganged up on (they rarely ever fight fair). Oddly enough, everything has changed. I don't see "homies" anymore. Now I see "emo kids." There's a substantial Latino population any many, but not all, are "homies" but they don't bother anyone.
