I'm sure after my post on racism, this topic sounds quite hypocritical, but I need some help understanding why so many Russians are nasty. The women are especially so. The men seem fatigued with life and more mild mannered, but those women, ugh. They make me feel sick with their voice tone and bitter comments. The ones who seem educated and well dressed are particularly baffling. I mean what do they have to be so bitter about. Is it their culture or what? Other people around the world experience poverty also and are generally kind hearted.

Don't feel guilty ; it's most likely a cultural thing, not genetic.

There's a Russian foreign exchange student at my school named Elena. And she can be a real arrogant bitch sometimes. Don't know if that has anything to do with her being Russian, though. She might have a reason to be bitter: she came from Siberia, which I frequently imagine as hell on earth, only with freezing cold ice instead of fire.

Many russians who live in western countries or stay there as exchange students are "nouveau riches". They come from families that earned money very fast in a couple of years and sometimes (or should I say very often) in an illegal way. They are simply spoiled.
I met some russians just like that but also many rich and tremendously educated ones that stayed very humble.

Imagine that all rich people were killed in your country, and all independent thinking people were sent to prison. You can't expect too much from those who are left.

This started out as a question about Russian attitudes/personalities, and became one of physical attractiveness. ??
I haven't met many Russians, but they (and people from former Soviet Bloc countries as well) often do come across as rather bitter or pessimistic. Perhaps this is an artifact of recent history, but it might be an enduring cultural characteristic.
I have learned that there certainly is some truh to the stereotype of Slavic nihilism and fatalism (as opposed to Anglo-American or German emphasis on personal initiative and will) as cultural traits.

That typical Slavic attitude might be a relic of communism or ethnic strife, though.

That typical Slavic attitude might be a relic of communism or ethnic strife, though. It predates communism, IMHO

I actually understand why russians are nasty but it's hard to explain. I understand them because i have experienced soviet times and I also have lived in Siberia 4 years. The first of all, russians after mentality are emotional and expressive. Secondly, they don't hide their opinions so much as western europeans (it is so called "heartopeness") and can say straightly what they think about somebody. The third, russians usually strictly divide people into "our" and "stranger". The fourth, russians often have negligence and apathy towards other people, nature etc. The fith, russians are dissatisfied that they aren't exactly western europeans or americans (Western world is almost idol, fetish thing for russians) and they try to be "western europeans" or "americans" by their understanding. About men i don't agree that they are more mild mannered than women. They can be sooooooooo rude! I think that all these negative things are because of really sad russian history which started since mongol invasion and continues till this day. Especially big stroke was soviet system what really spoiled and destroyed everything- not only nature and environment, not only culture, not only were killed people, not only economics were uneffective, but also changed way of thinking of people, made them agressive, apathy, pesimistic. In soviet times many people didn't see any reason to live. Still today in Russia is one of the highest pecentage of suicides in the world.
