Does anybody know how to tell the difference between f.e. a Korean, a Japanese and a Chinese.
My german cousin lived for six month in Asia and he told me that there is no problem to recognize whether a person is chinese, japanese or korean. But he could not tell me the specific characteristic by which he could tell the difference.
Is there a different mixture of mongolid subtypes in these countries which are responsible for the difference ?

I can usually tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese quite easily. The confusion comes from the fact that the Chinese are divided North from South and East to West, so there are a few differences among them. The Japanese vary from the Chinese in being more solidly built and less finer in features. The Koreans look very Japanese to me though some are dark skinned and also coarser featured. I am often wrong with Koreans. I have a Filipino friend who loves Japanese and Korean women and he can tell them apart very easily. I don't have his interest in East Asians so I find it more difficult.
The reason the three races look similar is that as neighbouring populations they have interbreed with the Chinese and the Chinese being the root race mixing with Tungusic indigenes in Korea and the Ainu/Taiwanese aborigine group in Japan. Both Korea and Japan have absorbed Chinese culture and immigrants and include many Chinese words in their languages.
It is hard to describe the differences between the three races as they share many traits in common like epicanthic folds, shovel shaped incisors, dry earwax, yellowish skin colour and so on. I consider the Chinese to be the more attractive of the three, the taller of the three and the least stocky.

"You may have a talent." You: 12 of 18. Average: 7 of 18. It's from watching German documentaries. Even an Indian-Tibetan movie I know was financed by Germans.

Holy shit! Where did this guy get his prominent nose and narrow face? Anyways, I got 6 out of 18. What I hate is that many east Asians get mad if you say that you can't tell the difference between them, yet when I have asked them specifically about what differences exist, they can never tell me.

I've travelled to more than one far East nation and live in West coast USA and I still can't manage better than 7/18

I managed 9 out of 17.. not bad... I put the "less" oriental faces in the chinese, and the others was kind of aleatory! alltough those with coloured hair I put all in the japanese people.

After saying that I could tell the difference between Chinese and the others, I found I couldn't. To excuse myself, those mongoloids were rather dark and very varied in appearance. In other words they were chosen because they were atypical. Most Chinese are not as dark or as stocky as those portrayed. In Australia, East Asian tourists come in large groups of the one nationality, and they look different because of their choice in clothing, the colours, their paraphenalia, behaviour and of course the sounds of their languages. Japanese and Koreans often bleach their hair, the Chinese tend to colour it reddish brown. So I guess I am better at knowing which East Asian group is which from groups and using other clues than individuals.
Very interesting. I have mentioned it before, but I asked a Chinese and Japanese friend whether they could tell. Honestly they said, sometimes, but they go on clues.

The Koreans, and Japanese are both Northeast Asian, with China it varies. But, I do think the Koreans and Japanese have more of a prominent fold.

Perhaps from admixture from another people in that area? Maybe he's Japanese with Ainu Admixture?

I visited Tokyo several times and while not common, this physical type was present enough so that I began to ignore it. I'm assuming that they were mostly Japanese. These guys are often tall (over 6 feet), but with a very thin, even frail build. They were a contrast to the average short, stocky Japanese. It's as if the Japanese have a body mass limit.
