I'd say that the northern Chinese are almost indistinguishable from Koreans and Japanese whereas the southern Chinese are darker and smaller, and therefore look more like Southeast Asians (Thais, Vietnamese, etc.). Sorry but I have trouble telling many Chinese apart from either Japanese or Koreans sometimes.

Distinguishing Asian people hasn't been difficult for me usually. Canada has a huge Chinese population (the largest immigrant group last year by far), and I grew up knowing quite a few Japanese-Canadian families and a number of Vietnamese people.
To me, Chinese people are usually shorter than Koreans or Japanese, have a deeper skin tone and almost always have black hair. Koreans and Japanese tend to differ more amongst one another in that some have green eyes or lighter brownish hair. As stated previously, some Koreans are dark and have larger features, while some are quite pale and more delicate looking.
Though I do know a Chinese guy who is over 6 feet tall. Think about the NBA player. He's enormous. (Of course I'm too lazy to look up his name.)

I think most of the brownish-haired green-eyed Koreans/Japanese are the due to hair dye and colored contacts. A few may be due to being of mixed European/Asian heritage, while I could see some Japanese possibly having it due to some Ainu heritage, but I'm sure It'd still be quite rare.

That one Chinese guy with prominent features. He could be of Tocharian ancestry.
