Black people tend to smell good, sort of sweet, not as "oniony" as caucasoids. In some places, there's the stereotype of Koreans having horrible garlicky body odor, because of the high garlic content in their food. Supposedly in Chile they have barred Koreans from entering saunas because of this--maybe it's an urban myth. Most Chileans are extremely sensitive to garlic, as it is avoided like the plague by many there. sorry, pretty much every black kid i've known has stunk of...God knows what...it's like dung i can't really describe it. Maybe that's just coincidence that the black people i know smell, but to me they smell pretty bad when you're sitting next to them in class. i offer no politically correct additions to this post either, it's my opinion.

^^^In black culture in the past, it was taught not to wash their hair everyday(or very frequently) for fear of "drying out" and "falling out".
Many little black girls would get hairstyles of convenience packed with oils, petrolium, and gels and then be forced to play, sleep, and bathe with the same hairstyle for up to 2 weeks until it is washed again.
That contributed to a lot in the past due to African hair myths being integrated into a newly Admixed black society

you are what you eat...hot spicy cuisines like Indian will do wonders to your body odour I had a Bengali friend who always smelled like the food her mother cooked. This girl bathed regularly (to my knowledge) but still couldn't shake the smell. She was very sensitive about it. It wasn't a terrible odor, to my recollection, but she was always trying to cover it up.

Very frustrating reading your very naive answers. However I know you are candid, so that makes up for it a little bit; but aroundtheworld c'mon are you explaining why black people smell like dung? And thats your reasoning?? funny how I got bothered more by aroundtheworld than nerdling ;D

^^Not naive. LOL. I didn't say they all smell like dung. In classrooms sometimes there is odour amongst the little girls due to the hair. I just thought it was worth mentioning that this could be a factor-not all the time.
I said most black women smell good to me. I don't usually detect any odour.
Why do you call my answers "fluffy"? LOL

When I was in pre-school (age 4-5) there were these two black sisters who smelled so strongly. I hate to say it, but the smell was so bad that I remember having to stay far away from them or I would feel sick. I did notice that their scalp and hair were very oiled and glistening. Every so often I would smell it on other black kids. At that time I told my mom that black people smelled. She got sooo mad at me. I guess she thought I was becoming some racist, but that wasn't it at all. Anyhow, I was like 5. If I were black I'd wear my hair completely natural. Who wants to put loads of chemicals and toxic products on your head (and especially a child's head).

^^Stella, it's not the chemicals but the lack of time parents put into maintenance. B/c most black girls don't have 'flowing locks" they either get pigtails(multiples), braids, or basic upseweet ponytail. some of them get chemicals and sometimes even chemical straightening does not help. It's just too much trouble to wash daily(for some) or even 3x's week.
A lot of that is changing now with better products and education on hair. I had a friend named Jamieelah once who had very smelly hair. It smelled like ca-ca and vinegar. She was always scratching and digging with pens and pencils and tapping her hair b/c it itched her so badly. She was miserable. Her mom would put rubber bands and pig tails all over her head and put petroleum on her scalp.(aack) We would play kickball, do phy ed classes and her hair would stay the same for up to 2 weeks.
Once I went to her house on a Saturday(Georgia) it was hair washing day for she and her sister. They screamed and kicked while their mother yelled at them and washed their hair in the kitchen sink. I felt bad for them. Their mother conditioned and then detangled and added some creams and dryed their hair and then put it back into the multiple pigtails. I was like, WOW.

However, I know quite a few people that don't. I know a lot of black women feel that they will not be able to get a decent job or social acceptance from white people unless their hair is straightened.

It's just too much trouble to wash daily(for some) or even 3x's week. It is the chemicals. When you have a relaxer (chemical straightening) in your hair, you cannot wash as often, because the hair will curl up and won't look right. With natural hair, you can wet it and not worry about it looking different than you intended. I know, I work at a natural hair care salon, and had my hair straightned for fourteen years before I decided to give up the madness. Now I can wash my hair as often as I like without worry of ruining the relaxer.
