Don't say "s'fardic", that sounds silly. His Secretary of State ( not general ) was Judah Benjamin, a genteel slave-owning Sephardic gentlemen. There were very few Ashkenazi Jews in the United States then.

Sfaradim. In Hebrew.
If you want something similar, "s'faradic" is better.

Jews were actually slaveship owners out of the Netherlands. (After Spain expelled all its Jews, they flocked there, dealing in diamonds and slaves.) Most of the slaveships are referred to as "Dutch" in the history books, but the ownership of the specific ships were overwhelmingly Jewish, with shipping owners named Solomon, Cohen, Levy, etc. * That's one of the reasons that American blacks have tension with the Jewish community, and why loudmouths like Louis Farrakhan get away with their rhetoric. There is actually a grain of truth in his contention that Jews historically had more than a little hand in the lucrative slave-trading business. [See link: www.blacksandjews.com/MarcLeeRaphael.html ] P.S.--Jews also traded slaves on the other side of Europe, between Russia and the Ottoman Empire, selling Europeans to the Turks. (Perhaps another reason Jews are unpopular in that part of the world, too.)

Well I also read that some of the Portuguese and Spaniards who owned African slaves in Latin America were Sephardic Jews.

Am I crazy in saying that he looks middle eastern? What looks so european about this guy? Er... everything? If you are speaking about Judah Benjamin, he looks absolutely average to me!

Thats just because of his clothes. Also, when I say "middle eastern" I mean the shas type of people, not the arabs. If Judah Benjamin was dressed in orthodox clothes you don't think he would fit in shas easily? He is of judeo-iberian origin just like a lot of north african jews is he not?

People would be surprised to know that there are Jews almost everywhere in the US, including very remote locations. For example, I am spending time right now in the middle of nowhere, in a small town of less than 4000 people in Central Oregon. (Nothing here really except sagebrush, pines and red lava rocks). I looked in the phone book and there are 12 Cohens. There is another small town in Oregon with almost no Jews, but there is a Jewish cemetary. There is a very small town in Texas with almost no Jews, but there were 2 or 3 Jewish families. Most are concentrated in large urban areas such as metro New York, but I always find it interesting when I see that there are usually some in unexpected places.

Yes, there are a alot of Jews in Portland, I don't know the numbers, but the percentage is much lower than a city such as Philadelphia. Also, Oregon has a very low total population: under 4 million in the entire state. BTW, Portland is the largest city, but Salem is the state capital.

Yeah under 4 million is not a very large population for a state, heck even the metropolitan area where I live has a larger population than that.

There were old, established Jewish communities in Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia from way back in colonial times. It wouldn't be a stretch to imagine the wealthier ones owned slaves. There were also relatively large Jewish settlements in Texas by the time of the Civil War.
