All I can say is that I just call myself an Arab, I don't make it a huge point that I'm Egyptian, but people usually know. However, 90% of the time someone asks if I consider myself Arab.

So these guys are north african, but not middle eastern? ![](http://www.michael-arts.com/images/Gallery/rabbi-babasali.jpg) Is that a portrait!? ...I answered your question: NAs might consider themselves berbers (Imazighen), arabs, muslims, etc. but never middle easterners, NEVER. I dont know much about the case of Egypt.

I agree, the North Africans I know seem to identify most with Middle Easterners, probably because of the common Arab identity, including the Islamic faith, Arabic language, traditions, etc.
I wouldn't know about the more traditional Berber tribes though. Maybe Berter or Igu could tell us about that.

Maybe Berter or Igu could tell us about that. I can only speak about the berbers of my country, Algeria, where the only existing berber ethnic that still identifies as berber are the Kabyles, the others have been recently arabized or semi-arabazied after the independance of Algeria. thus they'd rather consider themselves (and I consider them) Arabs more than berbers. My ethnic: the kabyles, are very conservative and ethnocentrist, no one speaks arabic and women can't speak arabic (two of my aunts and both of my grand-mothers don't understand arabic), even the new generation that has been to school can't speak "algerian arabic" because of the great distance between the dialect and the language. Kabyles mostly vote for secularist parties that are against islamism and arabism, we want to get rid of the arabic language and if studied, it will be studied as a third language. it is useless to us because we are not arabs. Kabyles don't care if someone is muslim or not, the main thing is that you have to be and speak kabyle, you can be a christian, a muslim or an atheist kabyle no one cares, the most respected one are the atheists. those atheists are not some kind of high educated people, you can see an old woman insulting the prophet of islam (that's very funny to see and to hear!). So be sure that we NEVER consider ourselves arabs, and NEVER NEVER NEVER middle easteners. just try to go in a shop in kabylie and ask something in arabic you will wonder if they deaf or impolite. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabylieen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Status_of_religious_freedom_in_Algeriaen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matoub_Lounes

do many north africans consider themselves "black"? i mean the ones mixed with black. I think the short answer is YES. Clear negroid admixture is visible in less than 5% of the NWA population. They all know how their famillies ended up in the central and northern regions of NWA. They can for example tell you how their ggrand father migrated from the south to casablanca or another big city searching a job. The arabo-berber admixture in them ranges from un-existant to very weak. I knew two of them : 1) One was a cyber monitor, a very hardworking guy. He used to explain his failures with girls by his Black/Afro look. Apparently he knew WHAT he is. 2) The second one is a coworker of mine (technical assistant). Very nice guy with whom I had many discussions related to Religion, Race, etc. He loves to call himeself 'Black Aryan' (un aryien en noir ;D).
