His father looks very white. Well within the range of European Mediterranean variation. Abdul, however, would stick out like a sore thumb in Sicily, I'm sure of it.

I never bought into the dark italian theory or italians looking like middleeasterners but yesterday i saw an italian guy on the bus who looked EXACTLY like an indian person. I thought he was indian but was lying that he was italian at first.

I knew many italian who looks like middel-easterners (or vice-versa), but never an italian that looks like an indian (except the cousin of one of my friend, who is half-indian). Everything is possible, too.

I thought Robert De Niro was half Italian and Half Jewish. I'm always sceptical of Americans claiming to be Irish, a trend seems to have developed in the USA towards claims of Irishness, I have noticed a similar phenomenon in Thailand where it is popular to claim Chinese descent and in the Philippines where they like to claim Spanish blood. I also have read that when Rome was at it's height it was popular among the noble Romans to be descended from the Etruscans. Maybe many Americans claim to have Irish ancestry because they have Irish ancestry. Seriously, some people claim to have Irish ancestry for the same reason that some women dye their hair blonde. They think that the Irish have more fun. That sentiment is fully expressed on St. Patrick's Day when Americans like John Kerry and Shaq O'Neill celebrate their Irish heritage.

I also have read that when Rome was at it's height it was popular among the noble Romans to be descended from the Etruscans. I'm pretty sure DeNiro's mostly Irish. What you said about Americans claiming Irish ancestry is partially true. Many Americans think they're Irish when they're really maybe 1/4 or an 1/8 Irish. It's also not uncommon to hear of Americans with Scottish surnames claiming to be Irish. Sometimes you have the same phenomenon with people claiming to be Native American, with Cherokee being the most popular answer. You can't always determine someone's ancestry by their surname, though. That's especially true when it comes to certain Irish and Scottish surnames. It's even more problematic when you consider the fact that many surnames were Anglicized. Then, you might meet someone with the surname of Chang whose mother's maiden name was Garcia. ;-)

I never understood why "Cherokee" pops up so frequently as an ancestry for american actors... were these Cherokee so popular, over other NAs, or what? There are a few reasons. Many Europeans settled in areas where the Cherokees lived, and the Cherokees were considered to be one of the "five civilized tribes". They were more European than the Europeans, themselves (to borrow a similar phrase), and marriages between Cherokees and settlers weren't uncommon in the sparsely populated frontier. Some of it is just name recognition, though.

The Cherokees are a popular choice probably because they are the most famous, as they were a numerous tribe in the southern U.S. who were forcibly moved west by the government to reservation lands in what is now Oklahoma. They suffered much hardship on their journey so I guess some white Americans (especially in the South) think it's cool or honorable to be part Cherokee as opposed to having an ancestor who fought for the Confederacy ;D. Some Cherokees fought honorably for the CSA. I guess that they weren't too fond of soldiers wearing blue uniforms.
