Isn't there a Lega Sud too? Lega Nord tried to create a Lega Sud spin off to gather all the forces in Italy in favor of federalism, but it didn't work. So there's no Lega Sud

De Niro even though he's only 1/4 Italian still looks more Italian than some actual 100% Italians like Ambrosini and Fabio for example. If you don't let that bleached hair carry you away Fabio actually looks very Italian. His type is more common in Northern Italy than the Southern Italy, but it's there. On the other hand, one actually doesn't see many people looking like Bob De Niro anywhere in Italy. He is obviously an American mix, who just happens to have an Italian surname. The same goes with Jay Leno, for instance.

I think De Niro looks more Italian than he does Irish or any other Northern European ethnicity.Armand Assante and Sofia Coppola could easily pass for being 100% Italian as well even though they are both half Northern European.

Every big western nation has many various realities within its own boundaries. A Catalan is different from a Castillian while a Provenzal is far from a Norman under many aspects. The same thing occurs f.e. between a Piedmontese and a Sicilian: aside phenotypical variability, Northern and Southern Italians differ in regard of culture, linguistics, genetics, gastronomy, historical events and so forth. The main difference is that Italy is a relatively young nation and the social-economical gap btw North and South is still overwhelming. Catalans are richer compared to the rest of Spain but yet they have their own autonomy and thus not so much to complain about; on an other hand, in France there's no real social-economical differences between North and South of the country. Plus, these two nations have a longer unitarian history than Italy (and I would add a far off better management of the Res Publica, by which I mean a better public administration) As for further considerations, Nockwasright's post sums up the point nicely.

Imo, the real and unsolvable problem is that from the Italian unity (1861) to now, the dominant cultural system of the nation is the mediterranean-Italic one ; northern Italy isn't neither mediterranean neither Italic. It's Central Europe, NOT southern Europe.

Imo, the real and unsolvable problem is that from the Italian unity (1861) to now, the dominant cultural system of the nation is the mediterranean-Italic one ; northern Italy isn't neither mediterranean neither Italic. It's Central Europe, NOT southern Europe. Please define Mediterranean-Italic cultural system versus Central European cultural system. Which are the differences and unresolvable problems which rise from the cultural clash? Really, I've heard this argument over and over again mainly from the mouth of "Central European" Northern Italians. But I've yet to hear a well argumentated, through analysis of the situation (historic process leading to it, solution to the problem and so on). For instance, I can't get it to my head how a state which was founded by "the Northern Italians", already then possessing more resources, both financial and cultural, was "kidnapped" by "the Southern Italians", as many Northern Italians love to claim...

I think De Niro looks more Italian than he does Irish or any other Northern European ethnicity.Armand Assante and Sofia Coppola could easily pass for being 100% Italian as well even though they are both half Northern European. I agree, there are definitely some full-blooded Italians who look like DeNiro. Assante looks VERY Italian, even though he has an Irish mother. As you know, I'm half northern/central European yet most full-blooded Italians assume I'm full-blooded as well. Many Italian/N. European mixes could definitely pass for full-blooded Italian, though I'd still say most do look decidedly mixed or in some cases more northern European. Still, because all European nations show some degree of overlap with one another, combined with the fact that most Euro-Americans are a mix of some type, most Euro-Americans would still pass for several European ethnicities based on their ethnic components. Take Irish-Italian John Travolta. I personally think he looks exactly 50/50, so he could probably pass himself off as a member of either ethnic group because of his seemingly ambiguous appearance.

Lindsay Lohan is also 1/4 Italian and the rest Irish just like De Niro but Lohan looks 0% Italian and 100% Irish,Lindsay would still look out of place even in Northern Italy so when it comes to Southern Italy you can definitly fuggedaboutit.Lindsay is about as Italian looking as Gwyneth Paltrow is Jewish looking.

^Actually in all honesty I think there's something about her facial features that suggests southern European heritage but you are correct overall, she would obviously fit better in Ireland than in Italy.
I think CSI actor David Caruso is surprisingly Irish-looking for being 1/2 Italian. To me, there is virtually nothing Italian about his phenotype.

Educate Me and Forrester who have 0% Italian in them yet look way more Italian than David Caruso,Lindsay Lohan,Leonardo DiCaprio,Jenna Jameson,Paul Giamatti,Maria Bello,Mario Batali,Danny Bonaduce,Kaley Cuoco,Ambrosini,Kelly Ripa,Gwen Stefani,Joe Montana,Jon Bon Jovi,Madonna, etc. But that's because Educate Me and Forrester are still part southern European even though it may not be Italian. In both of their cases, the southern European traits emerged dominant. The celebrities you just mentioned are all either half northern European or just very fair, less typical full-blooded Italians (Batali and Bonaduce).

Does Dan Marino look Italian ? He is half Italian/Polish.

^Actually Marino is only 1/4 Italian. I'm not sure if he's anything besides Italian and Polish, but IMO, he looks like a typical European-American mix and is therefore hard to place.
