Some U.S. athletes said recently that they will not participate in the 2004 summer olympics in Athens because of fear of terrorism. I don't think the anti-U.S.-led coalition terrorists will strike Athens this summer. I think the terrorists don't want to infuriate the world; they appear to be too shrewd for that. The terrorists are trying to pry away coalition allies. They struck Spain and successfully detached it from the coalition, knowing that an election was coming and that the Spanish people largely were against the invasion and occupation of Iraq. They are trying to pry South Korea from the coalition with the latest hostage drama, but this might not work.
I as an American would not be afraid of going to Greece to compete. With the whole world watching and participating, I don't think these terrorists would risk angering and alienating nations that they can later manipulate.
