Artemidoros: Atlantic Ocean seems to be the biggest threat of the three. Think Titanic. I don't have this threat! Wait a minute, i'm going there on foot!

"Oh come ON! What's wrong with computer games?"
Personally I have not much time for computer games but I did play Medal of Honor Frontline. Like the ad says you don't play, you volunteer. I shot hundreds of Nazis. Never thought I would enjoy it so much.

Yay, wonderful London (which I haven't had a chance to see but am convinced that is beautiful) It's 20.04. You've got 4 hours! I would need a concord to get me there in four hours. I can't believe I am missing the dámned noisy thing.

Never thought I would enjoy it so much. Yes, the joys of our modern age. I have to admit that when we were playing a LAN game I did play Axis a couple of times, which was so much easier to play for me, cause I always play a sniper; and on the coast of Normandy, there wasn't many a place to snipe as an Ally.

Wrong thread! I would feel completely inadequate in that thread

Oh boy, we got soooo off topic! I just wanted to ask Artemidoros what the hell he was doing on a Concorde when they were flying, but thought better of it. I'm also not congratulating HerrX for his chivalric endeavor of arriving in our Broken Land on foot, no sir.

Coming as who? Gargantua? Pantagruel? Gulliver? Finger racing? Or trying to stick to the context: flying on Gwaihir's back?

Hey galvez!
As I entitled this thread "Lord of the Rings" simply to get posters here and prove a point, and as we are already on page two after only about two hours, I think, galvez, my "gross generalizations" that most of the people here are nerds who play computer games, ignore reality, and have very few real life social skills has been validated.
If I entitled other threads, "Who is your favorite character from 'Lord of the Rings'?" I'd have the same overwhelming response. Or, better yet, a thread entitled, "Have you ever had a fantasy about being a Hobbit and winning the hand of a beautiful elf maiden?" would get overwhelming response...

But of course. And seen from that point, it seems to me (and probably to everyone else) that so are you. Spending hours online "just to prove the nerds how nerdy they are" doesn't sound so convincing either, now does it? At least I'm multitasking enough to post about other more scientific (but no less nerdy) things in the meantime, instead of waiting with a chrono swatch in my hand. Not to mention having fun.

Anyways, Since there's already an open thread; would anyone care to discuss the LOTR Saga from an Indo-European mythological perspective? If anyone is familiar with Joseph Campbell's work, the Rings does work with the classical pattern on his hero's journey. Of course, this pattern is not an invention of Mr. Campbell's, but a recurring theme in IE mythology. The Hero (in this case there are more than one hero in the story) starts mundanely, learns about himself, claims his birthright (or his right by relation and inheritance), sets on the road and eventually finishes the circle by many sacrifices and as a less innocent, and more worldly, almost god-like being. Tolkien's work is heavily influenced by Northern Sagas, and ver much so by the Kalavela of the Finns, although they're not IE. Here's an interesting book that has been written sometime ago, dealing with the subject: www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1892975815/103-4248324-9783062?v=glanceDoes anyone want to elaborate more on the issue? I'm assuming AWAR would have a few things to say..

My dearest rusalka, who-doesn't-have-a-boyfriend, but-pretends-she-does, cuz-a-second-cousin-who-lives-back-in-Nebraska-could-officially-qualify-as-a-"boyfriend":
As I've said earlier in this post, I'm here to meet new and interesting people. On rare nights when I can't sleep, especially in the winter, I will post on this board. After not having posted here for eight days, AWAR sent me a private message saying that maybe I was mad at you guys? No, just busy with real life. But the older I get, the more difficult it is to sleep at night...
