" From the inscriptions, reliefs, and occasional literary reference, the Hittites are seen as a stocky, robust and vigorous people of very mixed race. They were noted for their ferocity. Indeed, they were not a race in the normal sense of the word, but a political and cultural agglomeration of peoples of diverse ethnic and linguistic origin. Perhaps ‘melting pot’ conveys the Hittites best, as they came together for common cause, not by blood line. They were a ruling military aristocracy, holding sway over the local peasants, where ever they may be.
The Indo-Europeans which became the Hittites settled down among the indigent natives of Cappadocia and so dominated them, they became a ruling class. The reliefs depict them in a tunic, with boots having turned up ends, and a high peaked cap. Also from the reliefs, both their own and those in Egypt depict them as rather ugly in appearance, with receding foreheads, oblique eyes, and prominent upper jaws. They are described as having yellow skins and black hair. The type may still be found in parts of the Cappadocia plateau country, the original home of the Hittites. They were predominantly a warrior class of people, but they had among them a respected class of skilled craftsmen also. While the usual potters and cobblers were among this group, those held in highest regard were the smiths. "

"Approximately four thousand years past, an influx of Indo-Germanic people entered into the area of Asia Minor. As the earliest preserved form of the Indo-European languages, it has roots in common with Greek, Italian, Celtic, and German languages. Scientists consider the arrival of these people in the area as the first historical conflict between Eastern and Western cultures. It was their arrival which introduced their racial type (Brachycephalic skull types) to the area of Central Anatolia. The toughness of their skulls and their bony brow ridges has lead many Hittitologists to believe they were an Alpine (mountain dwelling) race even before their arrival in this mountainous area. The characteristic long heads and long, strong noses depicted in monuments has lead some to theorize that they may even have been related to the Norse West Phalians."
