It seems to me that of all of the pics of North Africans that I've seen, the most European-looking tend to be Algerians, many of whom would not look out of place in southern Spain or Sicily IMO. Has anyone else noticed this? Personally, I think Egyptians and Moroccans both have a more distinctly different look to them, probably due to greater Arab and sub-Saharan influence whereas I guess Tunisians and Libyans fall in between. Is it possible that Algerians have more of the ancient Berber ancestry, which makes them look more European?

I have been to Morocco, Algeria and the part of Tunisia accessible from Malta by boat. I find that the Berbers seem to have a KhoiSan element in them rather than sub saharran negro. Moroccans who live opposite Spain seem rather European in appearance as do the Tunisians near the ruins of Carthage. Algerians look largely European looking though darker Algerians are common. Of course I am talking about coastal Mediterranean populations not the populations of the interior where I haven't travelled to.

I didn't have the chance to travel enough my own country (Algeria) because of the 10 years terrorism, so telling you about Tunisia or morocco... because of having lived in the capital, All my friends are from the capital or from the regions at its east, and those people have the fairest skin in Algeria. (I'm not their friends because they have fair skin!! it's just cultural!) Of course, the Berbers are Caucasoid, related to other Mediterranids in Europe. Vestiges of Carthaginians, of ancient Phoenecian stock, would be akin, somewhat, to modern-day Lebanese. Arab invasions would contribute more Europid blood, but all of the above wouldn't add up to what y'all mean by "Euro-looking." Maybe remnants of Vandal (Germanic) and Alan (Northern Iranian) genes are responsible for this phenomenon in Algeria. Recall that in the 5th century CE the Vandals and Alans, united under one king, established an ephemeral state in North Africa. They didn't simply vanish; they were assimilated.

Yes, but the Berbers were yet described by the old people in the Levant to be blond and blue eyed or similar.
There must have been a seperate depigmentation, since their genetic ancestry today isn't what we call Nordic.

There seems to be a confusion about what is Euro looking between North Americans and Europeans. I am Australian but European by birth and direct ancestry and I return often to Europe. Euro looking means looks like someone from any part of Europe, that is, north, south, east or west. It does not mean what North Americans think Europeans should look like, for example, Thor the god of thunder. I mean real Europeans not stereotypes of hyperblond Northwesterners. So some North Africans do indeed look like Europeans most don't but that does not mean they are not caucasoids. The much maligned Levantines, Lebanese and Syrians, contain a number of European looking types also. I think North Americans should forget about the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians. They are extinct and exterminated by the Greek, Iberians and Romans; they are dead, extinct, gone to their maker, past, they are no more.....

I agree with Graeme that many North Americans here think that European-looking means northwestern European as the majority of Euro-Americans are either more northern/central European in ancestry. (btw I don't necessarily associate blond, Nordic-looking people as the epitomy of European-looking as I'm of largely southern European ancestry).
It's just that I thought that some North Africans, especially Algerians (as well as some Turks/Levantines) show physical overlap with southern Europeans, whilst the majority look pretty distinct from southern Europeans, while at the same time they are still Caucasoids. Hell I've been told that I even look somewhat Armenoid on this forum (Turkish), which still means Caucasoid and proves that there is some overlap between southern Europeans and North Africans or Levantines.
