In East Africa, particularly in Ruanda-Urundi, Uganda, and eastern Sudan, are found unusually tall, slender, and long-headed Negroes, the Nilotes, who seem to form a distinct subgrouping. Some authors feel that they show Caucasoid features, indicating North African influence, but present evidence suggests that they are simply a localized variant of the Negro. Other Negro groups are also found throughout this Nilotic area.

Past classifications of African physical types have included many inaccuracies and misconceptions, fostered not only by travelers and popular writers, but also by scholars. A common error has been to confuse linguistic with racial categories; these do not coincide in Africa and refer to quite different things in the first place. For example, the term "Bantu race" is sometimes employed, although the word Bantu actually refers to a linguistic grouping and not a physical type. Furthermore, the literature on Africa is full of statements such as that the skin color of a certain group shows Mongloid influence, or the thin straight lips of another indicate Caucasoid features. Single traits such as these are poor indicators of origins and contacts and are as likely to be due to local variation within a population as they are to past contacts.

Most Nilots are of the Nilotid type, which is a subrace of Negrids.
But Nilots can be mixed with other types as well - mainly Sudanid and Aethiopid, though the overwhelming majority is of the Nilotid type.

Sudanid and Aethiopids are essentially nonexistent so-called subraces. So-called 'Aethiopids are Nilotic primarily with a variety of physically features.
