Quite a melting pot. But then again I suppose every European nation has their own individual melting pot. Correct. Thats why its stupid to say that English people are anglo-saxon, Czechs are slavic or Italians are roman. Its all been mixed up in Europe. Every European is mixed.

I read a quote somewhere stating that Europe is a continent of energetic mongrels.

To some extent Europe is intermixed, and it's obvious that phenotype doesn't tell the whole story...
Slavs for example are a Nordic-Uralic mix.
The largest effect on phenotype seems to be latitude.
I think it is like Mendeleev's table of elements, where gold and silver, etc., are considered precious metals and linked together in the everyday world (phenotype), and Mendeleev based it on electrons, etc (genetics).

We Europeans may be quite mixed, but the mixtures are not the same all over Europe. The English are Anglo-Saxon in the sense of their language origins and some of their ancestry. Czechs are Central Europeans who speak a slavic language and can be classed as Slavic vague as that may be. Italians are not Roman but Italic. The facts are that you and I can find English who look Italian, Czechs who look French and Italians who look Swedish but that is just the variation within national groups and ethnicities. Even today among the mongrelised Europeans the English, Czechs and Italians on average look different and can be sorted one from the other. In Australia most Dutch Australians are very tall, blond and very Nordic looking, most Greek Australians are medium height, stocky and dark haired and most Anglo Australians still look English.
