Is anyone at liberty to explain the physical differences between Melanesians and the Indian population on the island of Fiji? If I'm not mistaken, both belong to the same subspecies of man.

Indians?
I just know that typical Fijis are more mixed Palaemongolid-Melanesid than pure with some phaenotypical similarities to Polynesians.
Pure Melanesids look a little bit different.

I'm talking about the East Indians the British brought to Fiji to work on the sugar plantations while it was still a colony. It was my understanding that both Melanesians and Asian Indians were australids.

Indians can be Indid, what is Caucasoid/Europid, Indomelanid which has an intermediate position or Weddid what is not really Australoid but a relative of Australids and of similar but more progressive and gracile appearance. Many Weddids and Indians from the East have of course Mongolid admixture.

Most Fijian East Indians are southern Indians.

Ethnic Fijians are melanesians, but some of their number are pure Polynesians. Melanesians are quite distinct from Indians whether North or South. Ethnic Fijians are tall, dark brown in colour, very muscular and have a pseudo negrid look eg woolly hair, thick lips and broad noses, but they also have a blond element in them which persists into adulthood and is combined with a more ruddier brown skin colour. In appearance the Fijians look like other melanesians: New Caledonians, New Guineans and Papuans. They don't look like Australian aborigines though they are distantly genetically related and are different from the lighter brown, more mongoloid, Polynesians. The Indians are caucasoid looking but as dark skinned as the Fijians. Fiji is tropical and the sun may contribute to the darkness of the Indians. The Indians are shorter, slender in build, straight haired ,and as Hindi said, are South Indian. There are Christians, Hindus and Muslims among the Indians. The Fijians are either Catholics or Methodists. An example of an Indian from Fiji is Vijay Singh, the golfer. Indians cannot own land as such as the land is controlled by Fijian chiefs of various clans and is not sold to outsiders, and work in businesses and growing cash crops. The Indians are not Australids, but Indics conforming in type to the Dravidian speakers of South India. There have been Fijian coups in order to stop the Indians taking over politically. The two groups get on, but do not mix racially.
