Something like a 1/3 of Pakistanis claim they are seyyed.
I think that just about says it all.

If you mean Sayed as being descendants of Hashemites of Hejaz than they can be found in Arabia, further Asia, North Africa and Horn of Africa.
For example my patriarch was from hejaz and came from Hashimiyyah line. It makes sense since the spread of Islam spread in so many different directions.

well since sayyed descendance comes from the father's, father's father's, etc side of the family the y-chromosomes of all these "Sayyeds" should be almost identical to the arabs in Mecca. And they should all share this, which I highly doubt they do. All of a sudden the whole middle-east is descendant from Muhammad

They should form a DNA testing project. If it turns out that one haplotype stands out, then this will be significant evidence for a "Sayed Modal haplotype" originating from a common ancestor.
