abcnews.go.com/sections/Nightline/SciTech/racial_identity_031228-1.htmlExcerpt: "'I just glanced at it, just a cursory glance initially — didn't really notice it much,' Joseph said. 'Then, I went back to it, because all of a sudden it hit me exactly what I had read. And it read, 57 percent Indo-European, 39 percent Native American, 4 percent East Asian and 0 percent African.' "After a lifetime as a black man, Wayne Joseph discovered he probably isn't black at all."

He looks like a mulatto. But then he is 40-45% Native American (I suspect the 4% East Asian is NA), and some of them are quite dark. He could just be a very awkward-looking Native American.

I did not know that Norah Jones' father was Indian. At once I suspected she was a "high yellow," but read that she remarked about being the only White girl somewhere. Aware that folks with just the slightest bit of Black blood classify themselves as Black, I decided she was White, with no recent (though possibly much older) admixture. If her dad is Indian, that could solve the puzzle. Does he have an Indo-Aryan look about him, or does he look like this fine gentleman?

Does he have an Indo-Aryan look about him, or does he look like this fine gentleman? That's him... Ravi Shankar, famous Sitar player.

It is often said that phenotype and genotype are different. Mr. Joseph looks like a black American therefore most of his genetic background is negro. It just shows you that your mtDNA or Y chromosome haplogroups are indicators of descent on the maternal line specifically and the paternal line specially. That excludes most of Mr. Josephs ancestors who may have been negroes, but his paternal line may be caucasian and his maternal line Americanindian.

Sorry my speciality is microorganisms not humans. Also I got confused as there are no actual ways of working out someone's phenotype from their genes as yet. Tony Frudakis excepted. What I guess you were referring to is snips, SNPs, there are over 3 billion SNPs in humans. Some of these SNPs are important in diseases most are mutations that do not alter amino acids and therefore proteins. There is a natural degeneracy to the genetic code. At the moment the SNPs used only tell you the location in the world some of your ancestors came from. If I remember right, Mr. Frudakis' children had different amounts of his "racial/geographic" indicators. So it cannot tell anyone's ancestry accurately if one man is 10% African and their brother is 0% African. It isn't possible yet to work out from an unknown person's DNA their eye colour/hair colour/stature potential and those other traits regarded as racial. So that black man may be significantly black, but as yet the tests are not able to detect it.
