The names Syria and Assyria are more than likely not related actually. The ancient Assyrians spoke an Akkadian dialect, but they eventually spoke Aramaic. The Kurds probably have some Assyrian blood in them, but they are a distinct group. Kurdish is an Indo-European language (Iranian branch of the Indo-Iranian branch).
