According to Soviet paleoanthropology, the Baltic type formed via gracialization of the Eastern Bruenn race. The Baltic type is characterized by a somewhat broad face, very light, ashen pigmentation, sub-brachycephaly, and a high incidence of concave nasal profiles. In various places, the Baltic type is modified by Pontic and Lappinoid stains. The Baltic type is the most important among ethnic Russians. Here is an anthropometric characterization of the Baltic race according to Bunak:
Head length: 186-195 mm
Cephalic Index: 80-84
Facial height: 123-128 mm
Greatest Facial Breadth: 139 - 144 mm
Facial index: 87 - 90
Nasal Index: 60-67
Stature: 165 - 174 cm
% pure light eyes: 41 - 83
% light hairs (Fischer 9-26): 35 - 75
% upturned noses: 12 - 60
% concave nasal profile: 9 - 41
% smooth upper eyelids: 15 - 43
Any group that falls within these parameters is classified as predominantly Baltic by Soviet anthropologists. The most common type among Russians, the "Illmen-Whitelake" type, is predominantly Baltic, but modified by various other strains in various regions. One must keep in mind that Soviet anthropologists deal as much with 'anthropological zones', where a given type predominates, mixing with other types on its periphery, as they do with discrete types. It is also worth mentioning that the Baltic race is viewed as a genetic entity as much as it is an anthropological entity. Several groups, such as Mogilyov Belarussians, Illmen Russians, and Illmen-Dnepr Ukrainians are metrically Nordic, but considered to be derived from the Baltic race by Soviet anthopologists, and are thus classified as Baltic.
Anthropometry for Illmen-Whitelake Russians:
Head Length: 189.5 mm.
Cephalic Index: 81.6
Facial Length: 127.3 mm.
Maximum Facial Breadth: 140.7 mm
Facial index: 90.3
Nasal Index: 63.3*
Stature: 167.0 cm
% pure light eyes: 49
% light hairs: 46
% concave noses: 9
% upturned noses: 27
% smooth upper eyelid: 15
*Soviet anthropologists use two nasal indices: one measure from the brow, and one measured from the nasion. I do not know which one was used in this case.
