Good post. Interestingly enough, Soviet anthropologists often united the Nordic and West-Baltic races into an 'Atlanto-Baltic' race. Do you see any Uralic traits in Gagarin?

Not really, I don't see any such traits. BTW, it would be a good idea for people with knowledge of the Russian language to write a summary of Soviet classification systems.

Not really, I don't see any such traits. OK, thank you. He's been classified as a "Ladogan" on skadi. I'll do this as fast as possible. Unfortunately, it is somewhat complicated; Soviet anthropologists often deal with "anthropological zones", areas where a given type predominates, but is generalized by other strains, vis-a-vis discrete types.

LOL, I remember the first time you posted Gagarin on the old RM board I said he had 'Mongol ancestry'. I've learned a lot since then.

I think that's another case of people subconsciously seeking Mongoloidism in other simply because of their geographical origin. The fact that someone looks different from a typical Northwestern European does not imply racial admixture. Incidentally, I am often struck by the morphological resemblence between Russians and Irishmen. I think that if someone gave Gagarin's hair a reddish tint (it was light chestnut), and his face a few freckles, he could very easily pass for Irishmen. A lot of what amateur anthropologists perceive to be 'Mongoloid' are actually Cro-Magnon features.

I think that you're all annoyed by the infantile idea that there are only three races in the world, and that the only truly white people are Nordics, the others just being various results of inter-racial porn

I have never noticed that. All the Irish people I've seen look distinct from Slavs. I meant in terms of morphology only. They obviously differ in term of pigmentation. Actually, Russian anthropologists believe that the Baltic type originated via gracialization and brachecyphalization of the eastern branch of the Bruenn race.

Actually, that's the first reasonable thing I've read about the Baltids. The 'mongolizing' that western scientists always attach to anything Slavic really becomes tired quick.
