Y lineages are highly subject to selective sweeps. Many living people identified as Native Americans have European Y lineages, simply because men compete and tend to breed with indigenous females when they invade territory. So Y gives a somewhat distorted (but also very clear in some ways) picture of genetic diversity. It's a good indicator of recent political activity, and even ethnic identity, since males tend to dominate political discourse in societies.
Maybe Wells is right, and Erectus entered the Americas. I have a lurking hunch that the various "Bigfoot" type creatures seen around the world (including Ebu Gogo) are Erectines of various stripes. For instance, I'd expect Neanderthal, apparently living in Ice Age Europe without clothing or much technology, is likely to have been quite hairy, even more than living Great Apes. The "yuck" factor of breeding with something that hairy could explain the absence or paucity of Neanderthal and Erectus genes in humans. Russian descriptions of Almas living in remote parts of Central Asia could be describing a type of Erectine.
What would an Erectus footprint look like?
