Gamkrelidze directs the Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies in Tbilisi and is a professor of linguistics at Tbilisi State University. Ivanov is professor of linguistics and chair of the department of Slavic languages at the Institute for Slavic and Balkan Studies in Moscow.
