I know a lot about meds because my husband's job consists partly of distributing them at a Health Dept. clinic. Symptoms in schizophrenics and manic depressives (bi-polar) have been greatly reduced with meds, yet he also sees many patients who are over-medicated and sometimes he fights with prescribers at the clinic to have them reduced. He's seen patients get better with reduced meds, and also sees many who could not function without high med intake.

IMO, it's attractive to certain trendy people because of its lack of emphasis on Biblical concepts of right and wrong. I think that's the case with many alternative religions. People, who consider becoming Scientologists, should read an objective biography of L. Ron Hubbard, the group's founder. Pay special attention to the individuals and organizations with which he was associated.
