The early Christians borrowed from the same source as Mithraism: Zoroastrianism. The same can be said of the Hebrews. One massive disadvantage Mithraism contained was that it only potentially included 50% of the population; women were barred. (I'm not saying that's right or wrong. Not passing judgment.)
Many Mithraists were soldiers. What happened to their children? At times they were raised by the mother, who, of course, not being a Mithraist, often was a Christian. Voila! Converts from the cradle. Big advantage.
As Christianity grew, it enveloped lots of aspects of Mithraism, amongst other religions. Just whose "birthday" do you think December 25 originally was?
