This is one of the reasons why the extreme right in the US no longer targets Italian-Americans, Greek-Americans, or Americans of Eastern European ancestry as virulently as they have in the past. These groups, especially the Italians, are now considered an important factor in mainstream American life. Marginalizing them would reduce their support base and thus their revenue.
In contrast, few people really know much about Portugal or the Portuguese since it is a small country and doesn´t appear on TV very often. It is therefore very easy to spread lies about Portugal to a US audience. Most Americans think Spanish people are part Indian, it is therefore not difficult to convince them that Portuguese are part black.

What I do know is that this sort of behaviour is virtually unheard of in Portugal, despite all of our alleged black ancestry. In fact, I think most of Portugal is more crime free than England. Except for a few bad neighbourhoods in Lisbon and Porto you can walk around everywhere, frequent bars and restaurants, and talk to people without any problems in Portugal. Most people in Portugal are worried about foreign delinquents attending the Euro 2004 tournament.

What extreme right groups say about Portugal will not influence what most Americans think, White nationalist groups are largely irrelevant and the strongest far right group in America, the KKK, are obviously anti Portugal and Spain as they are a white anglo-saxon organisation, they hate the French, Irish and Poles too. The idea that Portugal is part black is something I have never heard until recently, I would say the general impression that your 'average' American would have of Portugal is of a southern European agricultural society that nevertheless has maintained a typically mediterranean culture, in other words a typically patronising American view.

Most of the Americans I know consider Portuguese some kind of "Spanish" - that is, Latino. Historically, this assessment is not that far off the mark. Italians are not marginalized because Italians are not all that marginal, especially in major cities. They are considered pretty much white. Out in the country areas, which are more Anglo, Celtic, and Germanic, Italians are not so accepted. And I'm tired of foreigners whining about Americans and how intolerant we are. What a crock of s*. Do you accept any various and sundry people that come into your country as kinsmen with full rights and status? No, you don't. We are one of the most open and accepting nations in the world... and the others are all Northern European.

And I'm tired of foreigners whining about Nobody is whining about anything. What is being said is that many if not most Americans are just ignorant about Southern European folks. Actually, you are te one whining, about the opinions that others have about America.
