At least Ciaran Hinds playing Ceasar could be classified as an Atlanto-Med. But looks apart there really are many actors I remember from British television series and movies, and HBO really has built a reputation for producing quality programming, so I'm pretty confidant this won't be total crap either.

Unless maybe Polly Walker they could pass for "italians". We must consider that ancient romand oesn't mean strictly "originary of Rome" (Virgil, Catullus and Livius from Northern Italy, Seneca "spanish", Horatius the sono of a libertus from the south etc.) Tobias Menzies looks like an italian actor.
Did you see Gibson's "Passion"? The first two roman soldiers were italian actors ( there were many others in the movie as well) but they spoke latin with an heavy "romanesque" accent, quite funny to hear for us italians (and maybe historically accurate, who knows?)

A bit like reading the Asterix comic strips in Italian. While in other parts of Europe at least the Roman soldiers drawn to the comic strips speak Latinized original language, in Italy they speak Roman dialect. It's quite funny actually...

;D
heh eh it gave me exactly the same impression!
(it's quite strange here in Italy... the dubbing and the ranslation stuff I mean... Asterix roman soldiers being "dubbed" as modern romans, thus giving the idea- which modern roman readily adopt- that the only oncinet romans were "romani de Roma" as we say.. while italoamerican slang is always dubbed in a kind of mix-max of all the southern italian accents, while, e.g., there is a whole lot of people from the Appennines near my house who emigrated to the USA- one is Gandolfini, there's a thread on him)

This might have something to do with the fact that the New York / New Jersey American-Italians, even some third generation ones, really seem to speak English with mix-max Southern Italian intonation.

From what I've seen, the cast looks a bit too British. It seems that Hollywood never casts the right people to play ancient Greeks and Romans. It's always northern Europeans in the roles. Remember Alexander?? LOL. Has anybody ever heard of the Greek-Australian actor Costas Mandylor? He would've made a great Alexander IMO.

I think a lot of Americans can take portrayals of ancients more seriously if they have a well spoken British accent, it's probably to do with Shakespeares plays, plus this was a combined project between HBO and the BBC I think I'm right in saying. As for Alexander - well Northern Europeans playing Greeks was the least of my worries - how about the African American/Hispanic who played Roxanne - Rosario Dawson
