Ok this is really bugging me. Having an Ethiopian mum, and half of my family being Ethiopian I have always noticed how Ethiopians feel like they are superior to EVERYONE else. They think they are better than 'black' people (ie. bantu africans, who they call Baria, or 'slaves'), they think they are better than chinese people (alichaoch - yellow people) and even europeans. I don't understand this, as Ethiopians can be proud of having a long history of culture traditions etc but they should stop being so proud as to let that get in the way of actually doing something with their country. Does this have anything to do with the fact that Ethiopia was isolated for so many hundered years from the outside world? Is this like ANY other country youve heard of? It gets on my nerves!!!!!
(btw this mainly goes towards Habesha - the tigrayans and amhara)

Without sounding to pompous...Ethiopia was not all that isolated,it was conquered and colonized by the Romans and then again by Fascist Italy in the 20th century! So I don't know how superior they think they are...

then again by Fascist Italy in the 20th century!
And by no European nation before that very late time. That is one reason why they felt superior.

In fact I have to look up to what extent Rome colonized parts northern Abyssinia into the border kingdom of Nubia....
I think fascist Italy only held Ethiopia for around 5 years or so,until they had to vacat cause of the British. Eritrean was taken by the italians since 1885.
I know I'am just busting his chops!

parts of southern nubia were newly conquered by the axumites, losing some of it to the romans, did not have much impact on them. Probably the same as germany losing alcase and lorraine.
I believe the reasons for feelings of superiority and racism vis a vis the Ethiopians and other non - Aethiopid people is becuase of the issue of slavery. Most slaves in Ethiopia before the late expansion of the 19th century were indeginous people and nilotes. Incidently its the same case with somalis as they used to refer to bantu as "adoon" meaning slave, as slaves were procured from the kenyan and tanzanian coast through the slave trade.

Barre is a common name and distinctly somali, unlike the majority of names that are arabic derived.

I don't know, if you're suppose to feel superior as a people shouldn't your people have accomplished something great?

Is this like ANY other country youve heard of? I think is like this with most of the countries (or all of them), as its part of the nation state myth the unicity and superiority of the state. Englishmen, Frenchmen ad Germans used to consider themselves the absolute top dogs, and underneath they all still do. Chinese are famously self conceited, notwithstanding their misery. Russians, notwithstanding their condition of perpetual inferiority in Europe are convinced that will "save the world". Herodotus reports that ancient Persian believed themselves the finest human specimen, and priced other populations according to distance from them (the more distant, the worse). The USA are the non totalitarian country where you would see more flags around. Btw they are so self obsessed they name themselves just American, forgetting there's a continent there. Barbarian means "he who can not speak", this is how the Greeks used to call the non Greek speakers. ... I could go on. As you can see it seems that even the Albanians have a superiority complex, now, try to justify that. It is fine and comes at no cost to think you are the best one around; this is what justify national pride, that is thus shared also by the most basket case backward nations on hearth. There's no other reason ... Melnorme: they were conquered last not because they were a powerhouse, but because no one bothered to conquer them before. Actually they were conquerd by the by far weakest colonial power (Italy).

It seems that all Pastoralist/Nomadic ethnic groups and those Living in Mountainous regions develop a superiority complex. Maybe its something to do with loose political control exerted on them.

A friend of mine once told me that an Ethiopian restaurant had opened near to him in west London, after discussing what type of food you would get there we decided that they probably serve you an empty plate !
