Which kind of arabs where these things anyway? Is it a north african thing? I have also seen turkish people where these in some old photographs. But nobody seems to wear these anymore. What happened?

I know it was very popular in the Ottoman empire, I think it was even a part of the official uniform in 19th century. Some people in the Balkans used it too. I don't know where it originated, though, but will try to find out

To my knowledge, that kind if hats is popular among tunusians who were occupied for a long period of time and hence culturally influenced by Turks. Ex-president of tunisia (Bourguiba)In morocco, only the kids put it during their circoncision. I'm quite certain its not a north african invention.

Wow! It seems that even adult moroccans wear it as part of a traditional wear ...(Two princes of Morocco). Its not berber, anyway!

Well, an Englishman invented the kilt, then the English banned it, after which it of course became immediately popular in Scotland.
