What do you guys perceive to be the most common type of American look? I know that Americans are a mix of peoples from all over the world, but the type (or combination) I've noticed to be quite common is that of a German-British (or Irish) mix or just a general northwest European look.
P.S. Input from non-Americans would be especially enlightening. Thanks!

I think I would agree with that. We Americans are a bunch of mutts. I'm forced to wonder what the most common hair and eye color is. I would think brown for hair.

Yeah I'm thinking light-medium brown hair and blue to hazel eyes, along with features that would mostly fall in line within the UP types if we're to use Coon terms.

It would also depend on the region. The United States is a huge country with settlers from many different places. The types common to the northeast may not be as common in the southeast and whatnot.

Very true but I was just going by the most common type overall. As far as Euro-Americans go, the South is heavily British, the Midwest highly German and Scandinavian along with British, and the Northeast has a large contribution from southern and eastern Europeans. I imagine that the inhabitants of the West Coast and Pacific Northwest would be mostly derived from settlers who came from both the South and Midwest, along with transplants from the Northeast in some of the cities. Interestingly, the other day I was told I "look like I'm from New Jersey." I just assumed it was because I'm Italian-American.

Americans are mostly of the Nordic white sub race.

Americans are mostly of the Nordic white sub race. Well I don't think I'd say that because it's really more complex than that. Most Euro-Americans have some northwest European ancestry but that doesn't necessarily equal Nordic, especially since brown hair is actually more common than true blond. In areas such as the Midwest where many Scandinavians have settled, such types are more present. Alpine types are also well-represented as German-Americans are actually the most numerous ethnicity according to the census.

Still, you're not far off as there are considerable numbers of Americans with the stocky builds, broad shoulders, very fair complexions, etc. I'd say it's the UP influence.

I find it interesting also how Americans perceive each other. I've been told several times that "I look like a Californian." I'm not; I'm a New Yorker married to a Texan and I live in Oregon.

Yeah it's funny how that happens. So Californian, that's odd, maybe you dress like a hippie ;D j/k Murphee. That's definitely one state nobody thinks I'm from lol, I definitely don't have the whole stereotypical California look going (surfer/hippie).

Could it be that WASP are actually stockier and with bigger jaws than Englishmen and Germans (and it's not just perception)? It may be due to the first selection, maybe the bigger-more masculine types were more prone to migrate, or survived more to the migrations, or had more reproductive success in the very first stages of USA's history ... or also it may be lifestyle, nutrition, sport etc. However surely they developed a more "manly" culture than the motherlands so I think this is a fact free but interesting theory.

I'm not really sure actually, though any of your theories seem plausible. I believe that nutrition was a major factor in height increase as even children of immigrants were taller and physically bigger than their parents.

I think it is because I have very long blonde hair, but I am very white and never have a tan, so I find it odd they think I'm a Californian.

...and I used to be a hippie who did live in California years ago, involved in the Humboldt sinsemilla scene, but that was long ago.
