I thought that black hats were a european jewish invention. But all of the orthodox sephardim traded in their ancestors north african style clothes for modern european looking black hats. Look at Shas. This is a party about North African Jewish pride and tradition right? Yet they dress like orthodox ashkenazi (non hassidic) jews. Where did they learn to dress like this? More importantly WHEN did they start dressing like this? Was it after they came to Israel? Or before, when they still lived in Morocco? ![](http://www.knesset.gov.il/mk/images/members/peretz_yizhak.jpg) ![](http://www.knesset.gov.il/mk/images/members/azran_yosef.jpg) ![](http://photo.zoomshare.com/album/Portofolio/images/b388505c07619166311fe38835a357a0_10842872780/image.jpg)

Not just north african jews either. I think former Chief Rabbi Bakshi Doron has roots in Iraq. I could be wrong. ![](http://www.jafi.org.il/education/100/german/people/images/Bakshi_Doron.jpg)

Before the establishment of Shas, there was a clear 'Master : Student' relationship between Ashkenazi Ultra-Orthodox and the Sephardic "wannabes".
Even today, if a Lithuanian Rabbi orders something, religious Sephardim will almost always obey - but often, not vice versa.

Here is where I get really confused.
Does Shas represent actual "sephardim" (spanish/ladino jews and their north african descendants)?
Or does it represent Mizrahim (judeo-arabic/oriental jews)
It looks more like a real oriental jewish party than a european sephardic one.
When I think Shas, I don't see Ladino culture. I just think middle eastern jew.
Combination of both maybe?

Here is where I get really confused. Does Shas represent actual "sephardim" (spanish/ladino jews and their north african descendants)? Shas represents all non-Ashkenazi Ultra-Orthodox. They've even got a few Georgians and Caucasians. They don't really see themselves as 'Western' at all, so I doubt they really care about any 'Spanish heritage'. In reality, most Shas members are North African, although their rabbinical elite seems to be traditionally of Iraqi origin.

He's the son a famous Kabbalist ( the 'Baba Sali', now deceased ). Associated with Shas but not an overtly political man.
