The local police (Gendarmerie) arrested and killed a Berberist student with no reason. His name was Guermah Massinissa (nickname: Moumouh).
The riots kept for one or two years because the Government did not want to make apologies.
Currenty, The kabyles represent themselves By the Arouch (We did not allow any election) and there are no gendarmes in Kabylie, The berber language had been made "national" (as if it was a foreign language).

The riots started in 2001, the government made official apologies only in ... 2005, 4 years later, Here is a plate where you can see the mother of Moumouh with a portrait of her son, the arouch (Their leader is one with the long heair) and the prime minister (the one with glasses): www.newpressphoto.com/Newpress/banque/Manifestation/0982/planche.htm

Igu, that pic is funny ... See how the kabyle leader doesnt recite the coranic Fatiha. The algerian prime minister is kabyle himself, ...ironic, heh!? I guess he doesn't know the fatiha ;D , The prime minister (Ouyahia) is the most hated politician in Kabylie, Matoub had dedicated a whole song for him, he speaks to the prime ministers's mother : "Don't worry oh old woman, do not think he is a betrayer, just consider him dead". Ouyahia confessed that he listens to Matoub's music...
