With all the debate raging about GM foods in Britain and abroad, I wonder how long it will be before the introduction of GM humans. Society has weighed the risk of GM crops against its potential to save life and therefore they are used extensively in 3rd world countries. I wonder if this will be the same for GM human beings. i.e. their first use will be to cure crippling diseases such as AIDs or Cancer (if any such cure is discovered).

In the next 50 years we'll have a massive introduction of Genetic Modification in human affairs. First it will be probably for curing common diseases, but two branches shall overtake the medical one in no-time: military and cosmetic.
Creating uber-menschen for military purposes is a very constant SF motive but it's about to become true. And the titanic cosmetic industry shall not neglect the chance to create "beautiful people" from the beginning, huh?
Oh, it's a grim future for sure...

This is a very interesting topic. Not only Gene modified humans but also the cloning process. Correct me if I am wrong here: I have heard that eggs from large mammals (i.e. cows, pigs) can be "wiped" clean of genetic material and used to clone "humans" with the addition of "human" DNA. The eggs can be reinserted into the animal and brought to term. Theoretically that is. Assuming that this could be done a new race of beings or "humans" could be produced. Ok, the next step would be to genetically modify or clone "types" of people. Now since animals mature faster then humans it could be possible to modify animal/human genes so that a clone would age at a higher rate then the average human. The reason for this is; if you're making a super soldier you need him relatively soon...not 20 some odd years down the road. I hear everyone complain about a "brown race" or the "white race" dying out .....what if we GM a "Blue race"? What does everyone think?

Who needs "super-soldiers" when plenty of cannon-fodder is stilll available? ;D I suppose military research focusses more on high tech planes, tanks, missiles and other gizmos.

If that were to ever happen it would need to be in a country with no medical ethics. It could only happen in a totalitarian state where the rights of these new genetically modified soldiers were repressed.

I find it rather absurd. . All this idiotic human intention of controlling nature...playing some 'mini' god/creator. They have yet to perfect the perfect clone in animals, so how the Hel are they going to achieve it with humans. I can see it...a load of man-created misfits running around in the year 2020
