What do you think will be the outcome of this widespread disease. How will it influence the population and the racial makeup of sub-Saharan Africa?

Sub-Saharan Africa will become severaly de-populated in a matter of 50-60 years. My guess is that the some of the former colonisers will probably return and grab the opportunity. On the other hand, the lack of unskilled manpower will force those countries to accept a massive Asian and Muslim immigration.
Overall, Africa will certainly become "whitier".
Of course, this all depends on whether an AIDS vaccine is developed anytime soon or not.
It would be quite interesting if someone made an essay or a study on what are the health implications of some aspects of the African cultures in the spreading of the disease.

Racist issues and immigration aside, but it seems to me that the black african race is dying out.
There already isn't too many of them to begin with. I think that there is no more than 500-600 million Blacks in the world. Their population grows quickly, but they are also decimated by diseases and hunger.
A disease such as AIDS probably could wipe out Sub-Sahara Africa Blacks.

No, as a matter of fact I'm not sure about the number. I was hoping someone will correct me here.
I think that the influence of AIDS on the demographic is much more complex. For example, their numbers might be growing at the moment, at a high rate, but also many children are being born infected.

If there was less population presure on them then their birth rate would go down.

Well this certainly makes American White Nationalists seem dumb, as race-mixing with Blacks would help eliminate them as a race in N. America, as AIDS finishes the job in Africa.

The population continues to rise despite AIDS. www.unfpa.org/africa/demographic.htm What is peculiar about SSAfrica is that AIDS seems readily transmitable by normal heterosexual activity to MEN, which hardly ever happens elsewhere. Despite various attempts to obfuscate the reality by African writers who claim that the statistics are distorted and misrepresent the extent of African promiscuity by including non-AIDS related fatalities, the reality seems to be that is specific SSAfrican sexual practices that contribute to the scale of the epidemic. See this (ancient) site for the details: www.aegis.com/news/newsday/1988/ND880901.htmlFemale circumcision may or may not play a role, but the use of astringents/irritants by prostitutes does. Another issue: All African friends I ask all tell me that there is practically no homosexuality in Africa. Non-African travellers to Africa I ask suggest the precise opposite.

Sub-Saharan Africans have some sexual practises that promote the spreading of the disease.
They consider female vaginal lubrication as something unwanted, so women dry their vaginas before intercourse, sometimes with sand!

I have heard (but can't cite any studies) that Blacks have a genetic susceptibility to getting HIV.
It's possible that acts with low risk for other races - for instance, a man getting AIDS from vaginal coitus - are high-risk for Blacks.
Their rates in the USA and Africa are staggering.
I also notice that Scandinavians carry genes for HIV-1 resistance or even immunity (if homozygous).

There was a fascinating article in Discover magazine recently entitled, "Why is AIDS Worse in Africa?" that explored the causes behind the AIDS epidemic there. The conclusion was that Africans aren't any more promiscuous than other people. Rather, it was their tendency to have three or four long-term sexual relationships which distinguished them, and which spread the virus. For example: If a man goes to visit a prostitute with HIV, he has only a one in one thousand chance of catching it from that one encounter. So he's relatively safe. But if a man is sleeping with three women over the course of ten years, and one of them has HIV, then, well, chances are 70-80% he's going to contract the virus eventually, and spread it to the other women he's sleeping with. So it isn't so much promiscuity as it is unofficial polygamy that spreads AIDS in Africa, according to the article.
Also, I don't think that the AIDS rate in Africa is going to do too much in the long run. Their birth rate is phenomenal.

I was chatting with a South African epidemiologist this afternoon, thoroughly PC sort of guy, and asked him about this. I don't think it's genetic. He pointed out that there is a very high incidence of the other sexually transmitted diseases in SSAfrica, and that this, in various ways, increases the risk of men catching Aids from women - and vice versa of course.
I assume you all know that the South African president Thabo Mbeki actually tried to deny - for years - that there was any connection between HIV and AIDS? He claimed it was a poverty related illness. This may have been a way of dodging the demand that the state provide the drugs for palliative treatment; those drugs were very expensive. It was only when this official ideology collapsed, at Mandela's insistence, that the campaign to shame the drug companies into lowering prices could get underway.
However, there is still great reluctance on the part of African politicians to recognize that there is anything different about SSAfrican sexual behaviour. It's a hangover from all those missionaries they were exposed to, I think.

Sandwhich-
What is your impression regarding homosexuality in Africa? I have also heard from Africans that it simply doesn't exist in black African countries, but then, there's a huge epidemic among straight black men in America that is fueled - surprise - by discreet homosexual sex. Do you think the incidence of homosexuality is extremely low, or is everyone just too macho in Africa to admit it exists in their communities?

I've read a lot about bisexual men being the most guilty for transmitting AIDS from the homosexuals to heterosexuals among the black USA population.
