I don't understand why people celebrate birthdays. It puts you one year closer to death. Also, it's not like when you're a kid. You can buy your own stuff now. Birthdays lost their appeal after I reached 21. At 21 you're considered an adult in every way. Being able to buy alcohol is the last "hurdle." By the way, I'll fall in line with this tradition, as I always do so as not to hurt the feelings of others, and grudgingly wish you a happy birthday Wadaad

I don't understand why you're bringing up the accumulation of wealth, intelligence, and wisdom in regards to my post since that's not what is the point of my post. A person who is 48 is much more likely to die a natural death than someone who is 21. And someone who is 68 is more likely to die of natural causes than someone who is 48. Hence, the older we get the closer we are to death. Yes, if you're older it's more likely you have been able to accumulate money/assets. Just as it is more likely that you're dealing with physical ailments at 48 than when you were 21. Doesn't change that the older indivdiual is closer to death than the 21 year old unless he/she lives the life of a risk taker (heavy drugs, violence, etc.)
---------------------
Birthdays can also be seen as a celebration of life. "You made it one more year!" That would make sense. Sort of like patting people on back for surviving another year. Being able to avoid the ever present danger of slipping in the shower and cracking your skull. But my inclination is the opposite.

No, I'm usually optimistic but practical. I just see birthdays as a cheap way of celebrating life.

Although, I'd think a religious anniversary might be more important to some people. Depending on the person and culture, I suppose. Christmas, for example, is the ultimate birthday bash.
