Yes in Argentina and particularly Paraguay there are also Mennonite communities. In Mexico they are approximately 50,000. Most of them still live in small communities in the Northern part of the country, but recently many have started to move out to the state of Campeche in southeastern Mexico because of the more fertile land and better weather. If that trend continues I think most will end up in Campeche, where literally everything you plant grows and where you don’t have to worry about the water like in the desert like environment they currently live. Most of them are of German ancestry even though there’s a small community, called “Nueva Escandinavia”, whose members are of Swedish descent. The Mexican Mennonites’ ancestors came during the 20’s because they were being forced to join the Army in Canada. That’s why they, as well as the Yaquis, the last Amerindians to be conquered, are the only Mexican citizens who don’t have to make the military service and pay taxes. By the way, this is what Amish do when they want to party. www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/2002/may/amish/
