Bennett Greenspan, President of Family Tree DNA, a company offering the Y DNA, mtDNA and other ancestry-informative tests, is very nice. I've had several correspondences with him--I took the Y DNA test via Family Tree. I e-mailed him today, on a Sunday evening, and he responded today. Before this he responded within in a day or two. Cavalli-Sforza is also very nice, and although it takes him several months (he must be incredibly busy), he always writes back. I asked Greenspan what is the consensus about when haplogroup I1b, a branch of haplogroup I with some mutations and which originated within northwest Europe populations, arrived in the Balkans. He said that, although he's not sure about I1b, people "hunkered down in that area and all over Mediterranean areas during the last Ice Age that began about 20,000 years ago." Haplogroup I (Eu7 and Eu8) is prevalent in northwest and central Europe (Semino et al.). One mutation of this haplogroup can be found in Basques and in a large number, Sardinians. Anyone who is interested in taking ancestry-informative tests might want to consider Family Tree DNA.
