"Hair colour is only one indication among many that a Mediterranid element has persisted in Great Britain since Neolithic times. That this persistence has been particularly obvious in Wales was emphasized more than half a century ago by Fleure and James in a very long and detailed paper on the physical characters of the people of that country. One need not suppose that any Welshman is descended from Mediterranid ancestors exclusively. It is evident, however, that genes of that subrace are more frequent in Wales than in most parts of Great Britain, and random (or more or less random) assortment of those genes will more often bring them together in a single individual, to produce a close approximation to a Mediterranid, in Wales than elsewhere (265)."
Baker, John R. Race. New York: Oxford University. 1974.
It is worth noting that modern genetic studies have shown that the Welsh are very much related to the Basques.

Thank you for that post. It fills me with pride knowing that our people have established an outpost on the northwest fringes of the big Eurasian continent. I have begun learning some Welsh vocabulary on this site: www.bbc.co.uk/wales/learnwelsh/I plan to visit Wales sometime in the future, hopefully next summer.

I saw the most astonishing thing yesterday; I was watching, on my computer, the news in welsh, aavailable from bbc.com (if you are interested in hearing and seeing people speaking welsh, fawwaz!). It was a report on a suspicious and fatal fatal house fire. Anyway; they interviewed some guy, in welsh, who replied in the same language, which was apparently his mother tongue, as he spoke without fault or hesitation. The surprising part was that he was black! As I remember, he looked not unlike the picture fawwaz has (not that I'm saying you are black, fawwaz. This guy was "black" in the sense of having some African ancestry) Actually, South Wales has had a significant population of dark skinned people for a long long time; seamen from Africa and the middle east, as well as immigrants who came to the coal fields.

Welsh is still spoken in a valley of Argentina where Welsh immigrants established in the 19th century. One of my friend met in a Celtic bookshop (in Great Britain) a seller who spoke Welsh and Spanish but...not a word of English ;D

Shirley Bassey was born of an African father and a Welsh mother in Wales during the 1930's, so there were some immigrants there even then.

I went to Famouswelsh.com but the site has few photos. Years ago I thought that Tom Jones was black. Catherine Zeta-Jones looks like a latina, but Christian Bale looks like a dark-haired brit. Any other examples?

How can anyone think Tom Jones was negroid? His thick hair? Catherine Zeta Jones looks European. I would have guessed that a Latina is a female person of European origin like an Italian or Iberian before joining anthrology forum. Now I know it is a euphenism for a mixed race, mestizo type person.
I am from Australia and we don't use labels like that. Our Aborigines are black, but definitely not negroes. Until recently there were few South or Central Americans here who were not caucasian. Now of course there are some Chilean mestizo types thanks to Pinochet.
Why can't North Americans use mestizo or negroid or mixed race instead of black or latina? Europeans are of a number of phenotypes not just fair, tall.... Dark does not mean mixed race.
Tom Jones has blue eyes and is often tanned. He also had a nose job. He had a nose like the character Fagan, big and convex. I don't know about the other Jones, she may use excessive makeup to overemphasise her looks in that dark, sultry way. It has paid off, she's well known and desirable.

Speaking of Catherine Zeta Jones, this picture is from early on in her career. Quite a difference the years make.
