Hello. I am doing my own informal study about Latinos/Hispanics and race. I am looking for people of Hispanic/Latino/Latin American heritage who can answer a few questions about themselves regarding race and identity. You don't have to put your name and this study is only for my personal use to better understand the relationship between Hispanics/Latinos/Latin Americans and racial identity. I am looking for people who are only of H/L/LA heritage (meaning both parents are from Spanish-speaking countries or are of that descent).I would really appreciate anyone's participation if this applies to you.
Please Answer these questions and e-mail them to me at: Racial_Study@hotmail.com:
1) age (if you are protective of your identity, you can just put "early 20s", "late 30s", etc.)
2) sex
3) country/countries of origin (ex. Peru, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Argentina, etc.):
4) Were you born here (US/Canada) or abroad?
5) Where were you raised (city/state/country)?
6) Was the place racially mixed or of only one race (ex. White neighborhood, African-American/Black on, Puerto Rican, Chinese, etc.) Explain.
7) What race(s) do you consider yourself to be (ex. White, Black, Native/Indigenous/Indian, mulatto, mestizo, etc.)?
8) What race(s) do others consider you/see you as (ex. Black, White, Native, Asian, mulatto, etc.) ?
9) What race(s) are your parents?
10) In your opinion, did where you were raised influence your racial identity?
11) Did they raise you to identify as that/those race(s) or did you choose to identify that way yourself? For examle, what race(s) would you check if "Hispanic/Latino" were not an option. Explain.
11) What do you think about the notion of a Pan-Latino ethnicity (i.e., Latinos/Hispanics as one "group" separate from non-L/H Whites or Blacks)?
12) Has your race/racial identity and being Latino/Hispanic ever caused confusion for you or others (ex., Afro/Euro-Latinos who are mistaken as non-Latino/Hispanic Black/White)? Describe a time or a few occasions where this was an issue, if applicable.
13) What do you say if someone asks your ethnicity? Race? "What are you"?
14) What do you prefer to be called: "Latino", "Latin American", "Hispanic", "Spanish-speaking", (add your own answer if it wasn't given? If you don't have a preference, you can say that, too.
15) Comments? Concerns? Questions? Anything else I should add to this survey to make it better?
Thank you so much for your cooperation. I think this is a topic that needs to be studied because of the growing number of Latin American/Spanish-speaking people in this country. Again, please send your surveys to: Racial_Study@hotmail.com. I will try to answer any questions you have regarding the survey. Again, thank you so much for your help.
