There's a difference between the immigrants of today and the immigrants of yesterday. The immigrants of the past were attracted by opportunities. Many of the immigrants of today are attracted to the USA/Canada because of the welfare state. That's not to say that the majority of immigrants come here to feed off the state but a significant number do. They also bring other problems. One of which is the topic of this thread. I'd disagree with this. There is no difference between modern day immigrants and immigrants from the past, afterall human nature is human nature. What IS different is actual government policy of then and now. It was afterall the government's choice to become a welfare state today so laying the blame solely on the modern day immigrant is a bit unfair. I'm not well versed in Canada's immigration policy of the past so I'll speak of that of the US only. The difference is that immigrants of the past came to the US with the understanding that the government wasn't going to provide for them if they were in need. Sure immigrants did have cultural groups that provided for them when they first got off the boat but unlike with the government you see the people you're being helped by everyday and the understanding is that you wouldn't be able to live off the community forever and that when you do get your feet firmly planted on the ground you will contribute to the fund. Yes, it's human nature to take and look for free lunches, but free lunches weren't around back then. It was understood that if you take you also must give back when you were able to. That mentality doesn't exist under a welfare state because a government man handing out food stamps, etc. isn't someone from the community a person sees everyday so there's a detachment. That the government created the welfare state doesn't take away from the fact it's your avergae Joe six pack who is footing the bills and he has no choice in the matter. Many modern day immigrants are attracted to the US simply because of the welfare system and not for the opportunities. Immigrants in the US are much more likely to be on welfare and I don't see why they should be a burden on the rest.

So what are the reasons in your opinion for the US allowing immigrants to go on welfare? I would blame that policy, instead of an immigrant who is oppurtinistic as anyone else
