Recently I saw a Canadian documentary on the use of the word "Slut". For anyone who doesn't know what it means, it's a derogatory term used to put down a woman, describing her as something like a "whore" but more stupid, i.e whore is for gain, slut gives it away for free.
I won't go into details of the docu, but it was interesting, made good points. The main idea was that women who are called this are ostracized, devalidated, etc... The premise was that there was no linguistic equivalent for men. In a sense "stud" is, but that's a positive term.
Actually, I'd say that the non-sexually related term "looser" is very severe and ostracizes, and devalidates the recipient of the term, as much as "slut" does. Especially if women tend to be judged more for their bodies and sexual function, men have historically been judged more for their performance and ability to function and prosper in the world. Being a "looser" absolutely disqualifies someone from this. And, in a success-worshiping culture, the term "looser" is getting more and more powerful.
A propos, has anyone ever heard of a woman called a "looser"? It's interesting to see how the word is used.

The "equivilent" of Men is Women, yet both are obviously two very different things, therefore not "equivilent". When it comes down to it, a documentray such as this, is plain stupid. |
