I find inland Slovenes and the Austrians living in neighbouring provinces as Caranthania and Styria very similar: Nordid and Dinarid (="Noric") features with minor Alpinid elements and only very little Med and Baltid influence. Does anybody know if there are real differences that can be observed or measured?

There is probably some difference in genetic haplotype frequency, as Austrians would probably show a greater frequency of the "germanic I" (I don't know this for sure, just speculating), while the Slovenes would show some more balkan markers, however I'd imagine that they'd be similar, too-- that the differences wouldn't be so very big.

I think that Austrians are in general somewhat more Nordid and Norid and Slovenes more Dinarid and Norid - both with strong Alpinoid elements and more Osteuropid/Baltid influences in Slovenes. There is an overlap obviously.

I have heard (from many south Slavs) that the attitudes that the Slovenes harbor towards the other south Slavs is somewhat akin to that of the northern Italians towards non-Padanians.

I think that was more in the Yugo era, today I guess no Slovene would admit any links to the Balkans. My impression is that they compare themselves with other central European ex-Austrian nations.

Yes, Slovenia is no more a part of the Balkans than Austria, Hungary, or Italy are. It was just part of a largely Balkan country, Yugoslavia, for many years. Historically it's been in the Central European sphere.

What was the overall effect on Slovenia during the turmoil in the Balkans during the 1990s? Did they receive a large number of Croats, Serbs, or Bosnians as refugees?

Most came to Austria and Germany from what I know... Hmm.......you don't seem too glad ;D However, i find the thread quite interesting ; i personally visited both the countries and i can confirm a notable similarity between the two populations. Obviously both very similar to north(-eastern) Italy. I really think that "NORID" category is the most typical human sub-type of entire mittel-Europe.

I know one austrian guy who told me that "german" austrians who spoke with "slovene accent" were some of the best fighters in the world wars because they tried to prove they were germans.
