But why is there a difference? If it isn't admixture, then it must be divergence. Both are black. But one is obviously more West African-looking than the other. Why?

I would be interested in a study comparing all the blacks living in the New World, from African Americans to Jamaicans to Haitians to Latin American blacks and see how they all compare to each other and to West Africans.

Western Africans may differ from Afro Americans because:
Selection at the origin. Enslaved W.Africans might have been selected for certain attributes, that have perpretuated and developed seperately from the source
Natural Selection. In Response to he inhuman condition of slavery and the harsh transition to a new environment and and way of life and work.
Environment and Nutrition. In response to new diets and different environmental condition.
Depopulation. Of some tribes in Western Africa.
Admixture. Regarding admixtures with other physical types in the new world.

20 to 25 percent caucasian genes is a big deal.
There isn't much a question of why they look different than West Africans.

West Africa is big, there is more place there for more than just one variant. Furthermore there are two different aspects of Afro-Amis: a) the two basic Negrid types they have, Sudanid and (mostly Northern) Palaenegrid. Those type have different facial shapes, to some degree skin tone etc and especially body type. b) Europid (and other) admixture.
While its obvious Kelly has slight admixture and is not of a typical West African type, Wesley Snipes is, but of the Sudanid type. Furthermore, like I already said on other occasions, depending on the exact region you have various degrees of Europoid admixture, f.e. in Mali and Ivory Coast, less so in Nigeria of course...
The narrow face and more narrow nose is in most Afro-Amis the result of Europid admixture.

Halleluia, halleluia. Thank you Aryek. I have been saying the same thing consistently all along though not as effectively as Aryek probably as I am not negrid. All that happens when you mention the phenotypic differences of American blacks with African negrids in West and West Central Africa is an avalanche of abuse from American blacks who want to downplay the role of caucasoids and Amerindians in their genepool, and claims that American blacks look consist with African peoples because African negrids contain light skinned ones, Fulani and Berbers, straight nosed ones, Ethiopids, long faced ones, Somalis and so on to counter the obvious phenotypic differences that American blacks have with African negrids in their adopted homelands in Africa. It is interesting that the most interesting group of Africans to me, the KhoiSanids, are the least liked by American blacks. The hair too kinky, the nose too flat, the face too flat and too short maybe. Far from the ideal Imam type African they want in their family tree.

LOL at you guys, the reason why African Americans do not look like those West Africans is because those WAs are the southern WA variety...odd enough Carribean Blacks do resemble these dark round faced heavy featured West Africans ...AfroAmericans resemble Upper west Africans like the Hausa, the Wolof, and some other Nilo-Saharans of the Sahel region...if you want to see West Africans that resemble AAs look to Mali, senegal, Niger and Burkina faso not Ghana and Sierra Leone

That is unsupportablem and your opinion. American blacks look like no African negrids. Wolofs and Hausa! The chosen African negrids that American blacks want in their family tree - the equivalent of the Nordid for caucasoids. Nilo-Saharans of the Sahel region! Man what are you on? You are just doing the typical BS that some American blacks do. Hand picking people who you think look like American blacks because their noses are higher bridged, they have narrow faces or in the case of the Fulani because they are more caucasoid looking and lighter skinned. There are no Nilo-Saharans from the Sahel in the genetic background of American blacks. There are no Ethiopians or Somalis in the genetic background of American blacks. Senegalese negrids are partly mixed with caucasoids from Mauretania and Morocco. They are not pure African negrids and their caucasoid mixture is derived from African sources whereas with American blacks it is derived from caucasoids of NW European origins. Face up to it. You are not African. You are American. You have ties to Europe, Africa and the American civilisations through your mixed racial heritage. Forget the Hausa, Wolof, Fulani, Amhara, Somali, Badarians, Egyptians and move on.

I'm not African American by any means...and they DO look like certain Upper West African people. Like already said, West Africa is diverse, and not all west african ethnic groups were sent to America, only a few certain tribes provided the bulk of the slaves. This is coastal West African typical type: (lol) You telling me Afro-Americans look like that? Hell no Tis is Mali's president: he'd fit right in Crenshaw or Compton IMO Look at this Wolof man...you telling me he doesnt look AA? I think the majority of Afro American slaves were indeed Hausa, Fulani and Wolof types who a great deal were also Muslim and were forcibly converted by their white masters <--- a Fulani Muslim slave "Abdul Rahman" Historians document alot of Fulanis were indeed enslaved in America, Ponto, and you yourself can find the infromation if you do some research

I think its mix of both principles african americans are mix of peoples from a vareity of different distinctly looking groups in africa as well as having signficant european and amerindian genetic input as well. Of course the don't look exactly like any one group in africa now.

I've never heard of African Americans being descended of Sahelids like the Wolof and Fulani. Agrippa said Sudanid and Paleonegrid types are the most represented in African Americans. Unless he lied to me.

to be frank, i don't see the point of this stupid thread, i think that americans should wake up and stop seeing Africa in term of Acuna matata stuff : Africa is harsh and tough, people in this continent don't act just if they have something spiritual and positive to tramsmitt to the white American mankind ! It's pretty obvious to people who are accustomed with West africans that they don't look African Americans at all. African American look very artificial to me, especially phantasmagoric people like Denzel Washington or Beyoncé, they are like a totally separate race (just like handsome and pleasant Berbers are different from skinny and hooked-nose Arabs.) the only African American i ever saw on a tv show (my only factual source of African American fashion show) who could blend in a real West African population is this actor, Yaphet Motto, from the serie "Homicide." www.nndb.com/people/808/000022742/ and from what i read about Mister Motto, the guy is of Cameroonian origin. i don't think that people like this Taye Diggs could blend in with most West Africans, because there is something weird with his eyes shape... i don't think that the only criterion which separate AfroAmericans from Africans is the complexion.

Yaphet Kotto is just an American born African and not African American. I find it hard to understand black Americans going on about the phenotypes of all Africans and using them to justify the unusual appearance of black Africans. "Look! See there is a light skinned Fulani in Senegal. Look, there are narrow faced and nosed Africans in Somalia." This old man is William Moore, a former slave. That is how African slaves looked like in America not like Denzel Washington. Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers' Project, 1936-1938

I agree. I am an African-American and we Americans are by and large mixed. But because of slavery, segregation, politics, and the one-drop rule, we are classified as black, white, Asian, Hispanic, Indians, and Pacific Islanders. It is inaccurate, racist, and silly. I am an American; black-Americans are Americans. Dikembe Mutombo (NBA Player), Charlize Theron (nordic looking South African) and Hakeem Olajuwon (Nigerian) are African-Americans, not I. We are a mix of West or Central African (Angola and Congo), Caribbean (Barbados), European (mostly from the UK, France, Spain, and Germany), and Amerindians. Then again, most 'white' people are not pure either. They aren't European or European-Americans, they are Americans. They are mostly of European ancestry, but some have Asian, Indian, and African ancestry. Yes, Beyonce is part Creole, a mixed-race people with African, French, Spanish, and Indian ancestry. Most African-Americans can trace our ancestry to certain areas of West Africa and the Caribbean depending on state. Some blacks in South Carolina can trace ours to Angola, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Barbados. Some blacks in Texas can trace theirs to the Upper Volta and some blacks in Louisiana can trace theirs to Senegal. But we are not African and our culture is not African; our culture is American. There is much a difference in phenotype between a black American and a West African as there is between whites of mostly British descent born in the South and those from the UK.
