I tell you what hazel means to me. Some people have a different take on it. It means eyes that are greenish brown, a solid colour not an iris with two colours in them. Of course there are people with different colours in their irises, patches of different colour or a darker outer edge. If you go green and slowly added brown until the colour was mid way between brown and green then you have hazel.

I have hazel eyes too, and so does my Portuguese grandmother and so do many of my Portuguese relatives and friends. Is it a common Portuguese trait or is it just coincidence? We don't really have a name for this colour in Portuguese, so my eyes are always classified as brown or light brown. It's funny that sometimes they look more brown, sometimes they look more green.

That's what I thought. Now if only there was a word for people like me with multi-colored eyes. Hazel around the pupil then green. Actually the "Green" is really blue with fibers of hazel. Hard to explain.

What are all the different eye colors that a person can have?
My mom has very light green/grayish eyes. Her sister has your standard green (med hue) eyes. My cousin has brighter more intense green eyes (they almost look fake but they are real).
My brother has light blue eyes, icy. My uncle (mom's side) has more of your standard blue eyes. My brother's kids, both of them has dark blue eyes, darker than my uncle and of course his own. Are these all really different colors?
I have also seen dark green eyes, which look brown but when you look closer are really green, is that Hazel?
My sister was born with green eyes, but they turn brown when she was a little girl and stayed that way. There isn't hint of green in them anymore. Is that normal?
My eyes and my dad's eyes are both brown and always have been. Green, Blue and brown colors are the most common is my family. My mom's side is mostly Green and Blue with some brown eyes. My dad's side is mostly brown with some green and blue eyes. All the brown eyes are dark kind. No one has light brown eyes in my family.

I suppose it does mean a lot of things to different people as for me the color between green and brown would be more of a muddy brown and i would probably see the eyes as brown. In that link they definately looked brown to me. For me i've always thought hazel eyes are green eyes with enough brown in them so that they are not strictly green eyes anymore as i see green eyes as my own having maybe yellow and blue shades but no brown. However, if you look up the word hazel it's a yellowish brown so now i am confused too.

My eyes are green and the green far outweighs the brown. Some might classify this darkish green type as "hazel," but then again I think one should distinguish between eyes that are predominantly green with eyes that are green but even with brown, or predominantly brown.*
By the way, the Afghan pictured above has gorgeous eyes.
*Many Nordicists, I have found, have this latter type.

A clue is in the name - hazel - it is a nut, the hazel nut. The colour of a hazel nut in its shell is a light to medium brown.
QED
I've never seen anyone with really green eyes, the only green eyes I've seen are on cats. Human beings seem only to have eyes with a very slightly greenish cast.

All of those eyes in the photos look green to me and not close just green. Of course people have green eyes and not just cats. What do you guys mean by not pure green? Most people's eyes that i have looked at have a predominate colour with different shades in them (flecks) no matter what the colour. My eyes are green with blue and gold flecks but they are definately still green. Although, the hazel nut is yellowish brown the tree and leaves are shades of green, yellow and brown and maybe that's where the name hazel comes from for eye colour as if someone had yellowish brown eyes i would consider them brown. Hazel eyes to me are a mix of brown and green with the brown being predominate. Green eyes are predominately green and if someone had some brown in them but the overall effect was green then i would consider them green. I used to think if they had brown in them then i wouldn't consider them green but i think the definitions of hazel are not correct for people who's eyes are predominantly green so i would now. My green eyes: I was going to post them on the "what is your eye colour thread" but i think it's pretty obvious what colour they are even in this not so good picture.

I don't think the first two pictures are good examples of hazel. They seem too dark to be classifed that way. Hazel basically has a yellowish tinge to it.
