he is Italian (North) but he could fit well some near Eastern and Caucasus regions.
the wide square Jaw and the long Dinaroid nose can be typical of all of those areas
his name was Giovanni Guareschi and he is the author of the (then) famous 'Don Camillo' series

Reminds me of that famous Lundman quote claiming that some of the Ticinesi (Italian Swiss) look Armenid. It's probably a local Alpo-Dinaric or Dinaro-Alpine evolution.
