I was skimming through A Geography for Beginners written in 1864 by Rev. K. J. Stewart and on both occasions that he mentions Georgians, he notes that they are an incredibly handsome race. I was wondering whether that was the general opinion in the Western world at that time. Did anyone hear this before?

And Estaline is Handsome? lol...
I think the handsomeness of the Georgians might have come from them being pure caucasians...the purest of whites or some nonsense people believed in that time...

The 'Caucasian race' was named thus partly because of the Georgians' supposed handsomeness. It's not clear though if they were handsome on the outside, or merely had handsome skulls.

I think it's the external, as at the time "Caucasian" (random womenfolk and carniefolk) beauties were being shown off like rarities.

Reading about a possibly-related language to Basque discovered near Georgia in the Caucaus region, I was intrigued by a claim by the Georgians that they're related to the Basques. Here's a Wikipedia article on it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasian_IberiaEven more intriguing was the fact that the Romans actually called the Georgians "Iberians". Here's a map from the same Wikipedia article. The article ends with this quote: "According to the opinion of several historians, the Caucasian peoples together with Iberians, Pelasgians and Etruscans, might be branches of a former population living in a vast territory at the Mediterranean and in Asia Minor, before the people of the Indo-European group made the area the place of their habitat." * Here's a link to another article on it, and how Josef Stalin himself was quite familiar with the theory: www.georgiaemb.org/DisplayMedia.asp?id=252&from=archive

This theory was invented by a Soviet scholar of Armenian origin, Nikolay Marr, and enjoyed an almost official status in the later years of Stalin's rule. Marr called this pre-Indo-European people Japhethites, and his theory, Japhethology.

Actually, the ones that were famous with their beauty were Circassians. The anthropolog that came up with the Caucasian term probably used the Georgians as an example since they are the biggest ethnic group in the Caucasus region (and he mistakenly thought all the people in tha Caucasus region are Circassians), although traditionaly Georgians are not considered Circassians.

Interesting responses everyone. To Havlicek: Stewart mentions Circassians as well. The Georgians are a handsome race, and the beauty of their females is no less celebrated than that of the Circassians, who inhabit a neighbouring province on the north side of the Caucasus Mountains. To Droperdoo: My knowledge here is shallow at best, but would these "branches of a former population living in a vast territory at the Mediterranean and in Asia Minor" be descendants of Neolithic farmers who brought the agricultural revolution to Old Europe, before being replaced by Bronze Age IEs.
