How come Cuba lies in the tropical zone but Florida does not? Also, there are fine countries in the Tropical zone. One example: Thailand, a fairly civilized and developed country. The Thais are civil, law-abiding and hard-working. Of course, they are relatively recent inmigrants to the area from more temperate parts of Asia. Does the problem only lie with tropical-adapted (and tropical-evolved) people? Rushton anyone?

I live in Florida. I think it deserves its place in the civilization gap, to tell ya the truth.

Does the problem only lie with tropical-adapted (and tropical-evolved) people? Rushton anyone? There might be some truth to the idea of tropical-evolved people. But I think people from all regions have a tendency, if they live in tropical areas, to become more lazy "beach bums." Just think of Jimmy Buffet, "Cheeseburgers in Paradise," etc. Florida's economy flourishes on tourism, illegal immigration, and the drug trade. It's actually a pretty good example of how civilization doesn't work very well where it's too hot and humid, and there are plentiful beaches and hotties. Since the first humans to leave Africa along a coastal pathway, a deep tendency to "beach lifestyle" seems quite possible. Remember, one genotype can code for a variety of phenotypes given different circumstances. So "temperate adapted" people might have a normally silent "beach bum" suite of genes that is activated by certain stimuli, such as 90 degree humid heat, beaches, and thongs.
