Over the past 200 years or so we've seen many ethnic groups arrive in america and eventually ascend to white skin privilege status, the Irish, Italians, Greeks, Jews(ashkenazi), eastern and southern slavs etc. Which will be the next group to be let "into the club"

Portugeuse and Hispanic are already at white status.
Asians are now honorary white.
Blacks will never be unless they are mulattoid and higher and denounce their black status.

Portuguese? LOL When haven't they been considered white in the US?
I disagree with aroundtheworld that ALL hispanics have "white status." Obvious mulattoid or mestizoid hispanics (to say nothing of the black or indians ones) certainly aren't considered "white" by most Americans.
I do think white looking eurasians are considered more or less "white" by many Americans.

I have no idea. I thought 'white' in the cultural sense simply meant 'not black'....

I mean, are you asking if those people will ever become WASPS?

I chose Hispanics because so many of them have moved to the USA, and they are becoming like apple pie with salsa. I'm not including the ones who are predominantly Mongoloid or Negroid. I think that Hispanics increasingly will be seen as White, especially since intermarriages are rather common now. The children produced by those marriages might identify as White. They might be identified as White by society regardless of their choices. There also is the issue of surnames. Some people don't know that Bill Richardson and Ted Williams (what an excellent adventure they had) are Hispanic because they have English surnames.

An Irish !@#$er is not the same thing as a black !@#$er. The Irish had always been coming here - it' s just when they flooded in, they were too concentrated and too many to acculturate quickly enough not to be seen as uncivilised. And I don't see how you could call Five-Points uncivilised. But since you're asking who's next to become fully acculturated to the mainstream, why not just ask that? "White" has nothing to do with it.

Portuguese? LOL When haven't they been considered white in the US? errr.... they aren't considered white in modern day America? I've been surrounded by Portugese since I can walk and no one one in this area ever considered them anything other than white. Nor does the US government consider them to be of some other race.

She's saying what the US government classifies them as. What people on the street think is different (and to be honest most people are stupid when it comes to race). An even though the governemnt classifies Hispanics, regardless of race, as whites they do have a tendency to treat Hispanics as if they are all of the same race and that this race is non white.
What do you base that assumption on?

What do you base that assumption on? Not much, just my own experience. All the white looking eurasians I've known thought of themselves as white, and seemed to be thought of as white by most people, white and non-white.

You guys believe that all non-blacks are considered white in the US? Non-white, non-blacks in the typical N/S American pluralistic societies due tend to take comfort of the idea that they at least better than blacks. From Mestiços in Brazil to whatever.
